Despite many Solent businesses having had margins squeezed during the downturn, there is now every indication of a more positive profit picture for businesses across all sectors said The Business Magazine’s publisher David Murray, prior to introducing the Awards


“Economists we talk to are looking at more than 2%, perhaps 2.5% growth for the UK economy in 2015.


“The Solent 250 listing is not a pecking order, but a grouping of talented and successful businesses, based on turnover,“ he explained.


“We don’t dwell like some local media on bad news – we aim to fly the flag for the Solent


region – just as our sponsors and all the businesses in this room do too. This evening is part of that success tapestry.“


The Solent 250 data shows businesses are building revenue, Murray revealed, with cumulative turnover up to £11.94 billion from £11.1b last year. Together the 250 companies employ 82,000 people, and make a significant

Commercial vehicle sales – both new and used vans and trucks – are the speciality of Adams Morey.


Employing almost 300 people, the company, founded in 1952, now seems set to double its turnover within three years having moved from £48 million to £80m by the end of 2012, and continuing to grow this year.

The company’s recent success really began in 1973 when Adams Morey became an ’early adopter’, as Dutch manufacturer DAF started selling vehicles into the UK market. The DAF name began to gain widespread respect, aided by Adams Morey activity, and jointly the companies prospered.

Havant-based Fat face is best known as an active lifestyle clothing and accessories retailer but through its Fat Face Foundation it promotes environmental and charitable activities which support several worthy organisations throughout the Solent area, including the RNLI, Groundwork, Jubilee Sailing Trust, and the Marine Conservation Society.


The Fat Face Foundation was set up in 2009 to work with organisations and charities that ’enable people to actively enjoy the outdoors and respect the environments they play in’.


That outdoor ambition translates into charitable activities such as litter-picking (’whether mountain, beach, ocean or land’)

In 2012, the Foundation donated £60,000 to charities that support its vision, as well as supporting causes local to Fat Face retail stores to the sum of £30,000.


Fat Face itself was created in 1988 by two friends on holiday in the French Alps. Being short of money, they decided to design some sweatshirts and sell them at night so they could ski during the day. The rest is history, and today the company’s 200 stores across UK and Ireland, multi-channel retailing operations including a vibrant e-commerce
