with the new 3.0 liter TDI clean diesel en- gine, the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI was the first of four new TDI models to be introduced in the U.S. for the 2014 model year. TDI clean-diesel versions of the Audi A6, Audi A7 and Audi Q5 have now begun arriving at dealerships. The other German manufac- turers are on their game with diesel intro- ductions as well. Mercedes has equipped many of its SUVs with BlueTec V6 diesel. BMW’s first diesel 3-Series cars for 2014 have started arriving at dealers.


But gone are the days when the only car models that featured a diesel engine option came from expensive European car companies. Volkswagen, who has long represented the more affordable end of the German selections, now offers seven models in the TDI family. But now, there are plenty of manufacturers besides the Germans jumping on the band- wagon. Te Chevrolet Cruze diesel is poised to bring diesel technology to the affordable compact cars. In the midsized sedan segment, the upcoming Mazda6 SkyActiv-D, powered by a 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesel engine diesel, is set to arrive this spring. Cadillac is plan- ning on offering a diesel version of the ATS sport sedan. Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, a leader in the SUV segment, has also introduced an EcoDiesel for 2014, which Jeep says will achieve 30 mpg highway with a towing capac- ity of 7,400 pounds.


The 2014 Ram 1500--named Truck of Texas™ for the second year in a row by the Texas Auto Writers Association-- will offer a new, 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, mated with the eightspeed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.


Te biggest news in trucks lies in the fact that, for 2014, Ram became the first brand to offer a small-displacement diesel for its half-ton line of trucks. Other auto-makers are already rumbling about their diesel introductions in Texas’ highly popular half ton pickup category.


The first 2015 Ford truck model, released at the Texas State Fair, is the Super Duty F-450 with Ford’s second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel engine that promises to set a new bar in towing capability. The 2015 Super Duty is also the first to sport the latest King Ranch luxury trim package.


Ford has set a new bar in towing capability in the heavy duty segment, which has always relied on diesel with the 2015 F-Series Super Duty introducing the second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel engine. As Ford is the only heavy-duty pickup truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination, the engineering team brags that their powertrain works seamlessly, with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations – from concept to execution – made to complement one another.
