CCS Teoden, ridden by April Shultz, was fourth in four years old and older stallions and geldings under saddle at Dressage at Devon.
Some of these stallions are approved by the KNN, some by RPSI and some by both organizations. Te main difference between the two registries and their approach to the Knabstrup- per breed is that the KNN requires all stallions over the age of three years to pass a mandatory ridden performance test, while the RPSI does not necessarily require it. Tus there are a few stallions who have RPSI approval (second book only) but who have not yet com- pleted and passed the KNN ridden test.
In 2012 and 2013, we saw the first-ever Individual Breed Class (IBC) for Knabstruppers at the Dressage at Devon breed show, sponsored by Altamont Sport Horses. Te class was well support- ed, with some nice stock coming forward and gaining more visibil- ity in a prestigious dressage venue. Knabstruppers show talent in all Olympic disciplines but,
as the breed is quite rare in the U.S., it has been a struggle for Knabstruppers to earn recognition in the show ring. Teir great- est showing has so far been in the dressage arena, with horses such as Cita Normark (Ravaldi/Stella Normark) and Xavoy Middelsom (Xanthos/Mølager Columbine), who have shown extensively in and around Virginia. Te young stallion Halifax Middelsom is beginning to make his mark after placing third in the BLM Championships at Tird Level in 2012. Te stallion Ambrosius af Asgard (Atlantis) has been an ambassador for the breed in non-competitive venues such as stallion and breed expositions, where he has permitted thou- sands of strangers and children to greet and pet him after dem- onstrating his talent in dressage and jumping for the crowd. Also, exhibiting the stellar temperament of the Knabstrupper is the stallion Pegasus v. Niehaus-Hof, who was used by two different para-equestrian riders to qualify for the Paralympic Games held in London in 2012. Elmegaardens Affaire was imported from Scotland by Donna Current and is now compet- ing well in eventing under Michael Wilham. Also starting his eventing career is California-bred Knabstrupper Loki (Stavsdahl Lobi/TB mare) ridden by Michael Pendleton.
Knabstrupper Owners, Breeders
and Trainers Speak Out “Pajana vom Rosenhof is my first experience with a Knab- strupper and it has been fun,” says Candy Allen, a USDF certi- fied trainer through Fourth Level and a USDF gold, silver and bronze medalist. “As Pajana’s trainer I have enjoyed the challenge of keeping her challenged and interested. She is a hard work- ing horse who always wants to do more. It is tremendously fun to be riding her at shows and see the smile on everyone’s face as she walks by. Obviously, with those spots, she is hard to miss but she also exudes an air of excitement that I think attracts people.”
46 November/December 2013 SPECIAL Knabstrupper SECTION
Te mare Pajana vom Rosenhof ridden by Candy Allen.
Pajana is owned by Judith Grass, owner of Compass Rose Farm in Haymarket, Virginia. Fanfare de Bec KNN 2614 is a 2009 Sports Type leopard
Knabstrupper mare by Ambrosius af Asgard (Atlantis) out of Foglifter xx by Java Gold. Fanfare was awarded First Premium as a foal with consistent scores of 8 in type, frame, foundation and movement. In January of 2012, a fall in the pasture might have ended Fan-
fare’s under-saddle prospects before they had even begun. But after months of pasture rest, several vet visits and two to three weeks of inspection preparation with a trainer, Fanfare made a signifi- cant recovery and was presented to the KNN for mare approval at Cedar Creek Stables. She was awarded Second Premium and entered into the registry’s main book. Carla McKnight of North Carolina, a recreational rider look-
ing to venture into classical dressage, purchased Fanfare in 2011. Carla has been a fan of the breed since she began researching horse breeds suitable for therapeutic riding programs. She says that her love of spots and baroque horses led her to the webpage of a lovely black leopard stallion who just happened to be Fan- fare’s sire. Since then Carla has created the ‘Knabstrupper Net- work’ website as an online resource and place for fellow ‘Knabbie’ lovers to connect.
