Unit. The hard part is convincing sailors that turning a blind eye is dangerous and reporting suspicious behavior does not make you a rat. In many cases, your actions would be preventing someone from committing a crime down the road. If you know someone exhibiting a sudden change in behavior, uncontrollable anger, uncharacteristic isolation etc., you can report this to your chain of command, seek counsel from a chaplain or medical officials, or communicate directly with law enforcement and security officials. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can text NCIS or reach the agency via a smartphone app. If it‘s too late, and you find yourself in an unsafe situation with a co-worker, don‘t argue with the person. Leave the area immediately and contact security.

How to Effectively Use a Workplace Duress Code A duress code is a word or a phrase used during a conversation that alerts others to a problem and summons help as quickly as possible. The term typically refers to ‗a signal‘ that is embedded into normal communication. This may also be called a distress code or an emergency code. The best code words or phrases are something that fit the environment in which you work. The best codewords are simple and easily recognized. Avoid words like "Mayday," "Code 3" or "Fire!" and avoid using multiple code words for multiple actions. Any employee who receives a duress code should clearly understand what to do - call 911, alert security or send other employees to the person in need. If you have employees going to someone‘s aid, they need to enter the area cautiously, being observant of the situation and make an assessment before they proceed. You don‘t want to escalate the situation any further. At your next safety or security meeting, put duress codes on the agenda. Discuss their advantages for keeping your workplace safe and think through which would be most effective for your environment. They require planning and rehearsal to ensure an appropriate response, so it takes a little time to get all employees on the same page.

The Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., is supposed to be a secure facility, protected by checkpoints, armed guards and requirements of valid credentials for entry. According to authorities, 12 people were killed and eight others injured when Aaron Alexis opened fire. Employers can possibly avoid incidents like these by looking at all of the warning signs, investigating and putting prevention in place. According to ASIS International, an organization of security professionals, a fully integrated facility security program incorporates environmental design, detection systems, structural barriers, access controls, rapid communications, training and video surveillance. To choose the right security measures for your workplace and apply them properly, it‘s first important to conduct a risk assessment. Security risk assessments can help organizations see obvious and more hidden vulnerabilities. You should perform your physical security assessment at least annually to stay compliant. Employees should be drilled on other procedures, too, such as how to handle banned individuals and what action to take if a potentially dangerous person gets by them. Additionally, your company‘s access-control database should be continually updated to reflect recent separations or any relevant personnel changes.
