Annual Meeting & Trade Show


The Maine Landscape & Nursery Association will welcome Dr. Allan M. Armitage as the keynote speaker at MELNA’s Annual Meeting & Trade Show on January 23, 2013 at the Augusta Civic Center.


Dr. Allan M. Armitage Dr. Armitage is professor of horticulture at the University


of Georgia, where he teaches, conducts research, and runs the University of Georgia Horticulture Gardens — producing annual guidelines for annuals and perennials suitable for heat and humidity. Dr. Armitage travels widely as a lecturer and consultant and has received numerous awards from nursery trade groups and horticultural organizations, including the Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America. He was recognized as one of the best teachers in the nation when he received the distinguished National Educator Award from the American Horticultural Society. He is well known as a writer, speaker and researcher


throughout the world. He writes a monthly column for Greenhouse Grower Magazine, a national trade journal, in which he discusses new crops and new trends in floriculture. His awards include the Golden Trowel Award for his book


Allan Armitage on Perennials from the Garden Writers of America, the Education Media Award for his book Specialty Cut Flowers from the Professional Plant Growers Association. Dr. Armitage was recognized as one of the best teachers in the nation when he received the distinguished National Educator Award from the American Horticultural Society and Te Medal of Honor, the highest award possible from the Garden Club of America. MELNA will also be offering 4 exceptional seminars


throughout the day. “New Pests and Plant Diseases” will be presented by Ann Gibbs, Maine State Horticulturist; “Site

Management, Civic Engineering, and Wetland Site Creation and Management” will be presented by Colen Peters, Professional Wetland Scientist and Former Senior Project Manager for TRC Environmental; “Designing Sustainable and Native Landscapes” by Dale Pierson, President of Pierson Nurseries; and “New Plant Introductions for Greenhouse Growers and Garden Centers” will be the topic presented by Meghan Owens, Territory Sales Manager for Syngenta Flowers, Inc. Te Annual Awards Luncheon will be part of the day, along with MELNA’s Annual business meeting. Last, but certainly not least, we will have many exhibitors


on our Trade Show floor throughout the day. Tese companies provide goods and services to Maine’s green industry and it is their participation that makes this annual event possible.
