through boatbuilding, craftsmanship, com- munity and traditions of the sea. Crafts- manship is developed as apprentices work alongside a master builder to learn the tra- ditional methods of wooden boatbuilding. Seamanship is practiced as apprentices sail vessels built by the shop, and the shop itself is maintained by the apprentice community. The program has become a catalyst for the revival of traditional wooden boatbuild- ing and an integral part of the greater Rock- land community.
During the Open House, hands-on workshops will be available both in the morning and the afternoon. Two hour workshops begin at 10:00 and again at 1:00. Under the guidance of an Apprenticeshop instructor, participants will learn how to craft wooden mast hoops, an important part of traditional boatbuilding. Sailing and rowing sessions, weather dependent, will also be offered by our skilled instructors and apprentices. This is a great opportunity to experience traditional wooden boats out on the water. Space and materials are limited, so be sure to contact the offi ce to secure your place.
The Apprenticeshop, a school for traditional boatbuilding and seamanship in Rockland, is opening its doors to pro- spective students and the local community on Saturday, October 5, from 9:00 to 4:00. Hands-on workshops, tours, discussions and a Q&A will highlight The Apprenticeshop’s 9-month and 12-week courses. Since 1972, The Apprenticeshop has been dedicated to inspiring personal growth
Throughout the day shop tours will be provided by instructors, apprentices and staff members. Come see the shop, learn about the tools, the boats, and what it’s like to be an apprentice boat builder. Taking a guid- ed tour through the shop provides a glimpse into what goes into making a traditional wooden boat, and is a great opportunity to learn more about our CORE, ADVANCED and INSTENSIVE programs. CORE: Concepts of Wooden Boat- building, a 9-month course, is a solid foun- dation in the craft. It is rigorous and designed for students new to boatbuilding. Students

Sabre Yachts Hosts Over 50 Dealers at Conference in Maine
Sabre Yachts, based in Raymond, Maine brought together over fi fty dealers this week at the Bethel Inn in Bethel, Maine. Dealers came from as far as Australia and Barbados, as well as from North America -- from Vancouver to Halifax, Seattle to Miami and San Diego to Maine.
“Getting almost all the dealers in one location was really special” said Sabre President Daniel A. Zilkha. “It allowed us to thank them for all their hard work to cel- ebrate one of the most successful years in Sabre history, and to learn about the market conditions in each market.”
The conference also allowed dealers and brokers to learn about the latest models and future plans from the Sabre Design Team. Greg Bego, Principal at Downeast Yachting said, “It was a great opportunity
for all of us to get up to speed on the newest models and features in time for the fall boat shows.”
Congratulations to Dave Jirikovic of

2013 Tiger Grants Announced
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that 52 transportation projects in 37 states will receive a total of approximately $474 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) 2013 discretionary grant program. Among these, 25 projects funded at $123.4 million will be designated for projects in rural areas of the country. “These transformational TIGER projects are the best argument for investment in our transportation infrastructure,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Together, they support President Obama’s call to ensure a stronger transportation system for future generations by repairing existing infrastructure, connecting people to new jobs and oppor- tunities, and contributing to our nation’s economic growth.” Projects awarded to New England:

The Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER Discretion- ary Grant program, provides a unique opportunity for the U.S. Department of Transportation to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national ob- jectives. Congress dedicated $1.5 billion for TIGER I, $600 million for TIGER II, $526.944 million for FY 2011 and $500 million for the FY 2012 round of TIGER Grants to fund projects that have a signifi cant impact on the Nation, a region or a metropolitan area. TIGER’s highly competitive process, galvanized by tremendous applicant interest,
allowed DOT to fund 51 innovative capital projects in TIGER I, and an additional 42 capital projects in TIGER II. TIGER II also featured a new Planning Grant category and 33 planning projects were also funded through TIGER II. In the FY 2011 round of TIGER Grants, DOT awarded 46 capital projects in 33 states and Puerto Rico. The FY 2012 round of TIGER Grants, DOT awarded 47 capital projects in 34 states and the District of Co- lumbia. Each project is multi-modal, multi-jurisdictional or otherwise challenging to fund through existing programs. The TIGER program enables DOT to use a rigorous process to select projects with exceptional benefi ts, explore ways to deliver projects faster and save on construction costs, and make investments in our Nation’s infrastructure that make communities more livable and sustainable.
