We’ll be top dog for groupage, says new Europa boss

Former RH Freight joint owner Andrew Baxter has bought Europa Worldwide Group and aims to turn it into the number one UK/Europe groupage operator, he told FBJ in an interview. The new management team’s initial task will be to “to create a pan-European product that is competitive in all markets” equalling and then surpassing the service network of other leading carriers. The latter include Kuehne & Nagel - which bought out Baxter’s former company - and DSV. RH Freight was sold to Kuehne & Nagel in March 2011. In Baxter’s opinion, “it’s still the case that in

most parts of Europe, the number one groupage operator in each region is an independent - and DSV and KN are not independents.” Groupage operation can be a much

more complex business than air and ocean forwarding, Baxter believes, not least because it is the forwarder that bears the cost of the entire

The first line serving London Gateway port has been announced, ending months of speculation over the identify of the first customer for the new DP World-owned port. Europe/South Africa consortium SAECS - Safmarine/Maersk/, MOL and DAL - announced on 5 August that they would switch their UK call from Tilbury’s London Container Terminal to London Gateway, with the first vessel planned to call at London Gateway in week 45 (early November). In a statement, member line DAL said: “The

SAECS members are proud to be a front runner in this port development in the UK. With this change of terminal the lines aim to secure not only benefits for their clients through the new infrastructure (such as improved rail connections) and access to UK markets, but also operational advantages which will assist the lines in maintaining schedule integrity and reliability.” The SAECS lines operate a weekly service using eight

and widely-spread organisations, he argues. Although Baxter also plans to develop

Europa’s air and ocean forwarding and logistics offerings, he plans to keep those businesses “slightly separate” from the European groupage business, which currently
