New sports venture

SPORTS fans in Yalding and Laddingford are being asked to support a venture to raise £250,000 for a new clubhouse and sports facility. The Yalding and Laddingford Sports Association (YALSA) has been formed to unite crick- eters, footballers and all sports fans in the area to improve facilities on The Kintons, to en- able teams to compete more effectively and at a higher level in the leagues. The old pavilion has suffered several times from vandalism but, even when in pristine con- dition, is not adequate to meet some league standards. Yalding Cricket Club has

been relegated twice in succes- sive years, having lost many of its key players, and is in the fourth tier of the Kent Regional League. The football club has man-

aged to attract a core of new young players, and is equally keen to see facilities improved to help attract and retain new blood and to encourage a higher standard of play. Cricket club secretary Gra-

ham Hutchins hopes the YALSA group will bring to- gether all local sports support- ers, together with the parish council, to raise funds for the new pavilion, which would be available for all village sporting groups to use. He said: “We have spent a lot

of money on the ground but the pavilion is not fit for purpose.” Yalding FC juniors co-ordina-

tor Mark Pickup said: “Thanks to the support of Downs Mail, we now have 20 youngsters in- terested in playing next season for the under 13 team, andwith some younger childrenwanting to train with us most weeks we are now training with 23 to 24 children.”

STAFF at East Farleigh Primary School have made a good start at making the changes necessary to get a good Ofsted grade.

The school in Vicarage Lanewas deemed to require improvement – grade 3 – following an inspection in March, despite having gained a ‘good’ grade two years previously.

The schoolmanaged tohang on

to the grade 2 rating in terms of pupils’ safety and behaviour at the Marchinspectionbut dropped toa grade 3 in all other areas.

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences after officers executed a warrant in Maidstone. Officers with a warrant to search for an electric meter bypass went to a house in Gallants Lane, East Farleigh, where they recovered approxi- mately 50 cannabis plants,

There are now 12 children in- terested in playing for an U10 team, which could play league matches at Jubilee Field, Laddingford. The club has been accepted

into the Express Cabs Junior Football league, for which the season began on September 8. Sponsorship for the kits has

been provided by JCB Medway and the away kit sponsored by Roundwood Energy. The club has also received a number of private donations for the purchase of the goals. Any budding footballers who would like to join the youth teams – especially those aged 11 and 12 – should contact Mark on 07710 211922 or 01892 836046 – and bring their dads.

Mark said: “We are always

keen to hear from any adults looking to play either Saturday

The clubhouse does not meet some league standards

afternoon or Sunday morning.” The cricket club is also keen

to hear from any prospective players and members. Check the club website for more details: www.yalding.play- cricket.com or contact Graham Hutchins on 07771 970444. More details will be an- nounced of how businesses and residents can get involved in raising funds for the new pavil- ion at the inaugural meeting of YALSA on Tuesday, September 17 at the Chequers Inn, Laddingford, starting at 8pm.

School is making improvements At the end of June, inspectors

visited again for the school’s first monitoring inspectionandsaid im- provements were being made. They told acting head teacherRon Highman: “You, working in a pro- ductive partnership with the sub- stantive head teacher, have together made a good start in making the necessary changes.”

Mr Highman returns to his

deputyheadposition in September when head teacher Paul Sapwell returns following illness.

Cannabis cultivation arrest

was arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply, abstracting electricity and cultivating cannabis. He was bailed until September 23, pending further investigations.
