Good care at
pre-school OFSTED inspectors who vis- ited Belmont Pre-School in Barming found that its provi- sion was good. Staff supported and guided children in their play, and had a good understanding of the children, which meant they could meet their individual needs well. They provide children with
good child-led play opportuni- ties, indoors and outside, and have build strong partnerships with other carers and agencies that enhance learning. The pre-school, which is lo-
cated in the scout hut in Bel- mont Close, was rated good, but was advised that it could achieve an outstanding rating by rating and reflecting on ac- tivities to ensure that children are challenged in their play.

Blackmail bomb hoaxer jailed
A MAN who planted a fake bomb at a Maidstone supermarket and demanded £10,000 from the store has been jailed. David Williams (48), previ-
ously of Knaves Acre, Headcorn, called Morrisons in St Saviour’s Way, Maidstone. He said he had placed several devices in the store and that £10,000 needed to be taken toHeadcorn railway sta- tion.Hesaidthatiftheydidn’t believe him they should check aisle 23 of the store. The calls were traced to telephone kiosks in Maidstone town centre. Staff at the store checked the aisle and found a boxcontaining a plastic box with a flashing light attached. The store and its petrol station were
evacuated and the Army bomb disposal team was called. CCTV showed a man entering the Morrisons
store earlier that day and buying a Morrisons own-brand Christmas card. After Williams was identified as the suspect, his house was searched and officers recovered the card, which was ad- dressed to his partner. Williams was charged with blackmail and was sentenced by Maidstone Crown to two years and eight months in prison. Detective Inspector Lee Whitehead, from the
Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “This incident caused a lot of unnecessary con- cern for innocent people and took up a significant amount of police resources. Blackmail is a very serious offence, and I’m pleased that the courts punishedWilliams with a custodial sentence.”
Appeal for witnesses after fight A MAN was left with a fractured eye socket following a fight in Gabriels Hill. The 19-year-old,who also suffered a nose injury, was arrested
on suspicion of affray along with a 27-year-old man who sus- tained a swollen jaw. The fight happened at the top of the hill at about 11:30pm on
a Friday night. Police are appealing for witnesses to come for- ward, particularly a group of well-dressed friends. Detective Constable Martin Barrow said: “I would be very
keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the fight, or events lead- ing up to it. There was a group of friends in ‘black tie’ dress nearby at the time – including a man in a kilt – and they may well have seen or heard information that could help us, so we would like to hear from them, and indeed anyone else with in- formation.” Anyone with information can call 01622 604272 quoting
