Ludhiana CMC Reaches Out To Liberia


Recent civil war in Liberia has left the country with few resources, and one of the great needs is dental care. In 2010 there were only 6 dentists in the country, and 5 of them lived in the capital city of Monrovia,


rural parts of the country without dental care. All six of the dentists were aged 60 or older.


In August 2010 the Ludhiana Christian Medical College reached out to Liberia by sending Dr. Ashwin Sakharia, a dental surgeon, to serve for six months. His mission was to treat patients and to start a program of training dental nurse practitioners. Ludhiana CMC has contin- ued to send a string of dental college graduates to Ganta Methodist Hospital in Liberia to train dental prac- titioners. The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church has provided funding for the program, and equipment was provided by the Universi- ty of Tennessee.

The Tumor Board, headed up by Dr. Navneet Chaudhry, Head of Surgery, meets every Friday after- noon to review each cancer patient under treatment. The board includes members from all of the surgical specialties as well as Pathology, Medical Oncology, and Radiation Oncology. They also have input from Radiology which helps with reviewing CT scans and x- rays.


The US Ludhiana CMC Board has provided funds for a computerized microscope, computer and LCD projector to be used at these weekly tumor board meetings. The new equipment enables those gathered to view the tumors together and discuss the best treatment for the patient.
