Undertaking a placement year undoubtedly boosts your CV and graduate prospects, as well as allowing you to gain new experiences and put your theoretical knowledge into practise. However to me the most worthwhile benefit was that it helped me to realise what I did – and did not – want to do as a career. It’s one thing deciding the area you want to work in as a graduate, but it’s a whole other ball game actually understanding specifically what kind of job you want to do. A year in industry can help gain a better understanding of where to target your graduate job search.
With the job market being as it is I believe a placement year is one of the best things you can do to boost your prospects and narrow your job search. Do you agree? I’d love to hear other opinions.
