PLACEMENT YEAR - How It Helped Me Find My Perfect Career
Stuck deciding whether or not to take a placement as part of your degree? When selecting my five university choices, like anyone else, I looked at the location, quality of the course, modules and so on. However another major factor was whether a placement year could be integrated into the course. Why? Having already chosen to take a vocational course – marketing – I knew a placement year would be beneficial for a number of reasons.
Marketing is the most sought-after area for graduate jobs, so I knew it was important to stand out from the crowd. Also within marketing, and most other areas, there are countless different types of roles and industries to work within. Therefore it is important to get an understanding of what area is right for you. However no matter what industry you want to enter, a placement year will always help you to compete against the thousands of other students graduating each year.
Aside from the obvious benefits of a year’s full-time experience, decent salary (generally), and time living in a new city (if you choose to move), taking a placement year helps you to decide what type of
jobs to target when it comes to looking for a graduate job. For my placement I ended up working in a very corporate environment in
London. I can’t stress enough how much I loved my placement – I had an exciting role, with managerial responsibilities, met amazing
