Headbox “transforms performance” on Fourdriniers and hybrid formers

D

esigned for economical and environmentally friendly production,

high machine productivity and reduction of energy costs, and excellent end product quality, Metso’s OptiFlo headbox for Fourdriniers and hydrid formers has been installed at 20 paper mills since being launched in September 2012. Metso says the secret behind the 30 per cent improvement in CD profiling accuracy is the system’s ejector-type dilution system that mixes profiling water to every primary tube unlike traditional designs with a stilling chamber. More turbulence and flock breaking power is the result of redesigned hydraulics, using accelerating secondary tubes to deliver a more uniform and stable headbox jet to the wire. Raw material quality potential is maximised, and good formation enhances end product properties with perfect visual appearance. Energy savings are achieved

through a more efficient tube design and reduced internal pressure losses of the turbulence

generator and the closed-chamber type of the dilution system of the new OptiFlo headbox. Recirculation is minimised and overflow pumping is eliminated. The result is a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumed by headbox losses. Lower operating costs are also achieved through the simplified maintenance

requirements and exceptional component accessibility of the new headbox, making service operations easier and shutdowns shorter. There is no need for a heating system, which also generates energy savings. The modular design of the

Compact tissue machine from Voith impresses customers

Voith’s latest tissue machine design, the VTM1, is reportedly impressing its first customers, with the initial installation running in Brazil and the second due to start operation at the end of 2013. Designed to run at a speed

of 1,800 metres per minute, the VTM1 has a web width of 2.85 metres. The Yankee cylinder can be supplied with a 15 or 16-feet diameter and with a shell manufactured as a cast iron or steel cylinder. In addition, Voith is also providing

all clothing and roll covers as well as, at the customer’s request, the entire automation for the VTM1. The machine can be supplied with different press concepts, including the NipcoFlex T shoe press, which compared with

straightforward. The same headbox ensures optimum utilisation even though production or quality targets may change later. With OptiFlo targeted improvements in productivity and quality can be reached right after the start-up. More information from www. metso.com/pulpandpaper

conventional press rolls, provides a dry content that is 5 per cent higher, giving energy savings of up to 20 per cent. “This is achieved with no change in paper quality and very uniform CD moisture profiles. This technology also allows increasing machine efficiency and improving paper quality,” says Voith. More information from www. voith.com/paper
