First Ministeropens newtechnologyhub W

ales First Minister, Carwyn Jones, yesterday opened anew technology hub at Newport-

based Cassidian UK which showcases the company’s latest advances in the global fight against cyber crime. Cassidian, the security and

defence division of EADS, has invested asignificant amount to build the display area at the Celtic Springs complex. Michael Stevens, CEO

Cassidian UK, said: “Our vision was to create aflexible, engaging space featuring easy-to-grasp demonstrations of complex ICT, network and cyber security technologies for our local SMEs, customers and partners. “As one of the top four cyber

security organisations in the UK we recognise the need to support our supply chain in understanding both the threat and solutions that are available.” The plan is to use the

Technology Hub to host meetings of industry bodies, such as the CBI and ESTNet (the Electronic and Software Technologies Network for Wales), and show other organisations some of the technologies that might help them manage their data and informationsecurity more effectively. Cassidian also has an

ongoing involvement with local schools and hopes the demonstrations will inspire Welsh school children to follow STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, Maths) subjects through to acareer in ICT and engineering. The First Minister said: “ICT

and cyber security is agrowing issue for companies and having the ability to protect your data, informationand systems from attack is essential in today’s inter-connected business world. “This development

recognises Wales’ reputation for having highly skilled staff in this growing sector. It is really encouraging to see companies like Cassidian inspiring, motivating and engaging young people in the STEM subjects and playing apart in developing the next generationofscientists, engineers and techniciansthat we will need to support astrong knowledge based economy in Wales.”

Cassidian understandsthat

the impact of poor information and data security management extends beyond an organisation’s own boundaries and asingle virus can penetrate the defences of one company and spread like apandemic to both customers and suppliers through afew clicks on a computer keyboard. In recognition of the growing

cyber threat, leading UK Defence organisations last week announced the launch of the Defence Cyber Protection Partnership, which sees the industry working together to enhance and improve cyber security for the Defence Sector. BAE Systems, British Telecom, Cassidian, CGI-Logia, Hewlett
