AROUND KINGSWEAR

Around Kingswear CREEK NO LONGER

NEWS FROM THE SUNNY SIDE

CREAKING As you may have noticed we now have a beautiful creek with not only a new gate, well gates, but a whole new fence too. Soon there is to be a new bench and hopefully another in front of the lime kiln. Talking of lime kilns (clever that!) you can now walk easily down to the kiln on the brand new footpath and steps. When the contractors had ‘finished’ the rails of the new steps were as rough as a bear’s ..... nether parts, but five hours of hard sanding has made them much safer to the hands. Nonetheless do take care in case of splinters. And if

you were thinking of sliding down them, don’t. It doesn’t bear thinking about. Do enjoy the kiln though. It may be that the Regatta Committee has donated towards the new bench, as per their intention, by the time this reaches you. Thanks will be forthcoming in the next issue.

ONE-WAY CHAOS Just recently there has been a big increase in visiting cars

driving the wrong way round our one-way system. This must be considered less than desirable as it could lead to a very nasty head-on crash before too long. Because of the system we are not expecting cars to emerge from the village, from the right, towards the cemetery as we drive up towards Slappers’ Hill. This happened to me recently when a male motorist became aggressive and abusive, until I was able to tell him the error of his ways. He then blushed and apologised, but if I hadn’t swerved to avoid him he would have been embedded in the side of my car. And I’d just cleaned it. Happily the Highways people have been contacted, they have inspected the situation, and are now going to replace the worn no-entry signs at The Banjo and paint a go-left sort of arrow on the road to direct errant cars down Brixham Rd. more naturally.

FOOTPATHS For news about footpath closures and the like please refer

to your council newsletter where all is revealed, rather than having to repeat it all here.

WELCOME ABOARD The parish council welcomes new councillor, local girl, Al-

exa Paddock who joined the council in April/May and who will reduce the average age of our councillors by quite a lot of years. We are especially glad that Alexa has come along at a time when the affordable housing issue is under

by Mike Trevorrow

serious consideration as she is a parent of a young girl and living in the village, someone aware of the housing needs of the young people in the village at least.

KINGSWEAR COMBINED

CHARITIES Kingswear Combined Charities is a local charity commit- ted to supporting the welfare of children in Kingswear through the funding of recreational/extra curricular activi- ties or community events. Its roots purportedly go back to pre-1940 when a local spinster ran a youth club in the village – Kingswear Chil- dren’s Social Club.

In the intervening years the charity

has morphed according to legal necessities and changes in the village and its inhabitants but it is still committed to the support of activities for local children. One of its main concerns is the organisation and funding of Kingswear’s Annual Firework Display at Waterhead Creek – which is the envy of many surrounding villages and a wonderful family affair with food, bonfire and plenty of community spirit. The charity organises the event and volunteers as well as co-ordinating the fund-raising with- out which the event could not proceed. Other concerns include the management of a small eclectic group of local interests – including the Wishing Well next to the Lower Ferry queue on Fore Street. The charity raises funds through long-term investments and its regular Kingswear column - currently in By The Dart magazine (thanks to Mike Trevorrow) and previously in the Herald Express (thanks to Dick Parkes). The Charity is managed by 5 local trustees who meet twice a year and grants are given in the region from £50 - £500. Support in the past has been given to the local Tae Kwondo club, Kingswear Village School, and a number of individuals who have needed financial assistance in their sporting/life-enriching endeavours. If you would like any further information on how you might support the charity or if you would like the trustees to consider a grant application please contact in the first instance the Secretary, Peter Burr at peter@pburr.eclipse. co.uk.
