DSV to launch pan- European pallet service
8
Intra-European forwarder and road operator DSV is to formally launch its daily pallet service, announced at last year’s Multimodal show (see FBJ 3 2012). DSV Road managing director Rene Falch Olesen said the service would go into operation from early May and would link 32 countries via DSV’s existing hub facility at Schwieberdingen near Stuttgart. The network will stretch as
far East as Poland, the Baltics, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Greece and will specialise in cross- border movements rather than domestic traffic. Unlike most other pallet systems, it will be under DSV’s direct control, rather than operated through franchisees. Its aim is to complement
rather than replace DSV’s existing groupage line-hauls between individual countries. Although it will be primarily a pallet service,
other types of freight might be allowed on certain routes where this does not disrupt the smooth running of the operation. There will be a combination of
dedicated pallet vehicles and use of capacity on the existing groupage lines. An express collection and delivery option will also be offered for customers requiring faster times than the 48-72 hours envisaged for most routes. The service has been effectively
running for the past nine months, but now it is being officially unveiled, says Olesen. “We wanted to be sure that it works,” he explained, “and ensure that IT systems and scanning points were all working properly.” The IT system will be expanded later in the year to

schedule. Olesen says that the intention
is not to compete head-on with other pallet networks, some of whom have added European and intra-European offerings to their mainly UK domestic services, but to offer increased frequencies on
its own network. Aimed at smaller shipments of a few pallets, it will fill in the gaps between less than daily services and also provide links on less dense routes not served by a direct service. “The other pallet networks’ European services are more aimed at a domestic customer who occasionally sends a pallet abroad,” Olesen explained.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE & CUSTOMS
A new International Chamber of Commerce Commission on Customs and Trade Facilitation pledged at its first meeting in Paris in mid-April that it would expand its work to include multi-modal transport and logistics issues, building on the work of the former ICC Committee on Customs and Trade Regulations. The commission will be chaired by Anthony Barone, director of global logistics policy at Pfizer, who said: “The objective of the new commission is to identify strategic issues that will have a material impact on trade. Ideally we would like to achieve significant modernisation rather than incremental steps.”
