Police chase death Top marks in Mandarin

A 26-YEAR-OLD Staplehurst man has died after crashing his car while being chased by police. Ben Ashford, of Pinnock

Lane, was driving a silver Audi A3 near Linton Hill when he was spotted driving “at speed” by officers in a marked police car. They followed the Audi along Maidstone Road towards Staplehurst and reported it quickly disappeared out of sight. Ashort time later the offi- cers discovered the Audi had left the A229 and hit a tree on a bend between Cross at Hand and Summerhill Road. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Inspector Martin Stevens

from the Serious Collision In- vestigation Unit said: “We are trying to build up a picture of where the car was going and

where it had been. If anyone saw the car driving through Sta- plehurst, or any nearby towns or villages, I would urge them to get in touch, howeverminor the information may be as it could be vital in helping us establish the full circumstances of the crash.” The crash happened at about 2.40am on Saturday, March 23. The Independent Police Com- plaints Commission was in- formed but decided not to investigate. The crash was just a few miles

along the road from the spot where taxi driver Brian Mait- land and his passenger Irene Clare died in a three-car colli- sion at the beginning ofMarch. Witnesses or anyone with in- formation can call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) on 01622 798538.

DEVELOPERS hoping to build a complex of park homes on the banks of the Medway at Yalding have received a setback to their scheme. John Hilden and Gary Haffenden pur- chased the disused caravan site, off Hamp- stead Lane, with a view to creating an up-market residential development of lux- ury mobile homes. The site has a chequered planning history,

with both sides at loggerheads as to the in- terpretation of documents dating backmore

MAIDSTONE’S Cornwallis Academy has achieved a top 10 slot in a na- tional Mandarin competition, after students testedtheir vocabulary skills online.

The Academy, in Linton, achieved eighth place in the national Vocab ExpressMandarin Challenge Cup Grande.

Liam Mace, in Year 8, achieved38thplaceoverall in the individual stu-

dent category andwas presented with a certificate from Vocab Express to recognise his achievement.

Liam was one of 24,000 students from more than 250 schools that competed by logging on to Vocab Express to test their vocabulary knowledge in order to score points towards their individual scoreboard and school league table position.

Mobile homes developers encounter setback as site use is ‘seasonal’

than half a century. The applicants believe the owner-occu-

piers have a right to live in their homes all year round – but the council claim the site is constrained to “seasonal use.” Maidstone Council has now refused an application for a lawful development cer- tificate to continue use of the site without conditions or limitations – which has been upheld at appeal. Owners of the site first obtained planning permission for use as a caravan site in 1953.

This was renewed in 1961, with all condi- tions bar one, imposed on the new permis- sion. The council said: “To continue to use the

land as a caravan site without conditions or limitations would not be lawful. “The council does not accept the con- tention that there exists a deemed planning permission…that is unrestricted.” The applicants want to put 17 park homes

on the site, of which four are already in ex- istence.
