DEAR
I would have loved to win the U.S. Open. I am quite happy with my six Majors. They defi ne my journey in golf. But the Grand Slam would have been so nice! For a player, the U.S. Open has always been among the sport’s most diffi cult tests. The USGA traditionally sets the course to a most diffi cult standard and, at this one, level par wins the Championship. We remember all the magic moments, melt- downs and miracles on the U.S. Open stage: Nicklaus, Watson, Woods and Mickelson, among a long list of iconic U.S.
GOLFER,
Open champions. And Rocco Mediate is among those whose walk will eternally be etched in our memory with his dramat- ic effort at the Cham- pionship versus Tiger Woods in 2008. There are three keys to
victory as the golfers ap- proach this historic venue at Merion. It’s simple. Strategy, patience and accuracy will deliver the champion. So look for the guy with the unwavering short game. The guy who resists the temptations in the Major Championship pressure cooker — there’s your champion. I promise you this: A great story will unfold.
A great champion will contribute his name to golf’s history. The magic of the Majors will make its mark on your memory as a sports fan. I know it will mine. I trust the pages of this
Viewers’ Guide to the 2013 U.S. Open will add to your experience. Some gifted golf writers have contrib- uted their inside-the-ropes perspective. Enjoy.
Sincerely,
Sir Nick Faldo
