Jack Nicklaus said the U.S. Open was a “total examination.” What makes it so diffi cult for a player?
T e U.S. Open is about identifying the best player by giving the sternest of tests. It’s most demanding in every aspect. T e fairway is narrow, the rough is very deep, the greens are usually very fi rm and fast. In my opinion, it can push too far, stifl ing cre- ativity and frustrating some of the players. It’s a very serious competition. Your mind has to be in a steel trap for a week.
