Big pots with succulents Don’t forget yuccas large succu-
lent. Yucca is hardy to a zone 3 and has the added advantage of send- ing up sprays of white flowers. It makes a stunning thriller in an arid container that can be filled with all manner of wonderful succulents as companions. There are also many succulents that will work as trailers, including some of the sedums and such interesting specimens as string of pearls.
A yucca can fill a pot by itself or combine with other exotics (above and right).
Rubber tree plants take centre stage with licorice and ivy, left; and sweet potato vine and petunia, right.
Dealing with large containers While large containers are all the rage, filling them with heavy and expen-
sive potting soil is not your only choice. Remember, most plants use only the top 10 to 12 inches of soil for their roots (grass roots go deeper) so you may want to consider filling the bottom of the pot with something besides soil. Anything will do – look around your yard and see what offers itself as a pot filler, then add the potting soil as the top layer only. Add 13 to 14 inches at least. This will ensure that you have good drainage and the pot will be easier to move as it will be much lighter.
