[EDITOR’S NOTE] Upcoming Events 2013

Original thought can be precious. It’s an ‘a-ha’ moment, that initial spark of an idea that spreads like wild fi re, when you can look back with clarity and defi nitively label the turning point for success. T is epiphany launches new companies, fosters innovation and literally changes how business is done. T ese ideas are highly coveted; we patent them and protect them as if they were a winning lottery ticket. But I was once told that good ideas are constantly raining down upon everyone and it is only

those who take the idea and make it a reality that can ultimately reap the rewards. Recently, I attended the AWRF meeting in Ft. Worth, Texas, which boasted record attendance levels of 700 participants. T ere were businesses new and old, garage startups that now are full-fl edged businesses, small businesses that are now corporations and corporations who have come full circle and returned to their initial roots. What truly was interesting though was the continued creativity and ingenuity within our industry. T is was not just a venue to network with others, but to showcase new ideas and products that have the ability to aff ect applications beyond our industry. Not content with just the status quo, businesses seem determined to fi nd the next idea and break new ground before the next seed of an idea takes root with someone else. In this issue, we feature a classic name in the wire rope industry, Loos and Co., and highlight their commitment to advancing technologies within some of the most innovative aerospace companies in the world. We also feature the Cobscook Bay Tidal Energy Project, recently awarded the AGC’s Alliant Build America Award. Finally, a modern-day oil rush in North Dakota has bucked the trend of the larger economy over the past few years, and rigging shops are taking advantage by supplying for today but planning for tomorrow. Regardless of how you arrive at a new idea, nothing will happen without transforming that idea into action. After all, an idea is simply the initial step, not the end result. Some may call it competitive drive, while others highlight the rougher edges and prefer plain persistence or just a classic case of stubborn. Either way, anybody can get lucky and fall face fi rst into an idea, but it takes a true leader to materialize that idea into something valuable. As I’ve also been told, it seems that the harder we work, the luckier we get. I’m always interested in your stories, please email me with your news. As always, thank you for being a part of Wire Rope Exchange!
