UNIVERSITIES By Jake Butler in Study in America

As unfortunately we already know, in 2012 the cost of attending university in the UK will rise to £9,000 a year for many students. After speaking to a group of current A-level students, we are expecting this heavy rise in tuition fees to lead to some British students seriously considering study abroad.

And this is not a light decision – embarking on a degree and attending a university in a foreign country can be quite daunting for any student, but at the same time of course it’s incredibly exciting!

Why America?

Last year just over 8,000 students from the UK enrolled at an American University, and this number is increasing year on year.

America is home to many of the world’s most respected universities, including the likes of Harvard, MIT, Stanford. They are therefore also some of the most sought after for students wanting to study abroad, making them incredibly competitive in certain subjects.

However a lot of the decision making depends on what you’re looking to get out of studying in America. There are also many US universities and colleges which are not always well known but do offer great

education programmes as well as a valuble wider student experience. It may be that something as simple as location attracts you to one university over another.

There are many factors to consider, and we’re not going to try to second guess them here. Rather, our job is to provide you with all the core information you’re looking for to help you make the right decision for you.

So could you take the plunge? As part of our new Study Abroad series, Save The Student

How much are American University fees? The cost of attending university in America is probably one of the most critical variables to consider. However I’m afraid it’s important to make it clear right away that studying abroad is not cheap. Nevertheless, the cost of the fees will of course vary between institutions and there are some funding sources available for international undergraduates.

The average cost of American university fees is £22,000, and this is just for the tuition. Once you have added the cost of living (not to mention flights home) then you could be looking at as much as £30,000-£40,000 a year.

American University System

If you are looking to study in America, then it really is a good idea to know how the system works over there. There are quite a few differences when compared to the UK’s higher education system.

For example, like Scotland, it takes 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree in America. For the first 2 years the courses tend to be highly varies, with specialism in your subject area coming in towards the tail- end of your degree.

How do I Apply to American Universities? Firstly, it’s important to note that there is no central body (like UCAS) that facilities American University applications. You will need to apply for each university separately, which you can do online on their separate websites. You can apply for as many as you like, but be careful not to spread yourself too thinly.

Benefits of going to an American University Every student will have their own reasons for wanting to study in America. Our research has uncovered a number of key benefits for going to university in American as opposed to the UK. For many it will be a daunting, but also an incredibly rewarding and eye- opening experience choosing to study abroad.

Available Funding for Studying in America

Funding to study abroad is one of the most important things that international students will need to consider. The cost of studying in America is the highest in the world, so any money that you can get in funding or scholarships is a must for many students.

There are a number of schemes available for high achieving students, especially for keen sports people.

Top 10 Universities in America If it’s academic credentials you’re after, then you’ll want to know which American universities come up top in the rankings. Just remember that there are a number of ranking systems based on different statistics so just because a university is top overall it does not mean that it is the right one for you or your course subject.

So Reach for the Stars… and Stripes We wish you the very best of luck in your adventure to study at a university in the states. Wherever it may be, you will have a fantastic time whilst doing something that makes your CV stand out. “Live the American dream!”
