Crash site to

be improved KCCisplanningtoimprove Linton crossroads after a num- ber of personal injury crashes at the junction. The scheme involves intro- ducing a right hand filter lane on the south side of the junc- tion (Linton Hill) and re-align- ing the traffic islands on both of the A229 approaches, to allow for the increased traffic lane. The traffic islands at both

sides of Heath Road would also be re-positioned in order to allow better visibility for those turning right and the traffic sig- nals would be replaced to those with a right hand filter. Consultation ended onMarch

28, and if there were no objec- tions, the scheme will be ear- marked to go ahead.

Treasure hunt off A REQUEST to gometal detect- ing on The Lees has been thrown out by Yalding Parish Council. Members felt that allowing members of a metal detecting association to search for hidden treasures on the piece of public open space would “open a can of worms”. Not only would it encourage others to follow, but it would lead to other issues such as ownership of any valuables un- earthed.

Vicar brings touch of magic

PARISHIONERS in the parishes of Coxheath, Hunton, Linton and the Farleighs will be hoping their new vicar can wave a magic wand to stem declining rolls when he takes up his posi- tion in June. For not only is the Rev Peter Callway, an energetic clergyman and avid opera fan, he’s also an amateur magician! Rev Callway (57) takes over

the five parishes from Rev Peter Walker, who moved to a less de- manding benefice in the South West.

However, juggling five parishes and five sets of Sunday services – aswell as a quintet of parochial church councils and a large quantity of churchwar- dens – should be child’s play to aman whomanaged to hold the attention of a room full of four- year olds at his granddaughter’s birthday party. He’s already promised to

bring a few tricks into the pul- pit at family service time. Rev Callway came late to the ministry, following a demand- ing role in business and indus- try. He worked in IT and human resources and spent 23 years working for BP, including work in the USA, South Africa and the Far East. While training for the ministry,

he spent his final three years in the workplacewith Transport for

London, working on a strategy for human resources. Born in Dartford and raised in Swanley, Rev Callway says, de- spite his extensive travelling, his heart remains in Kent. Ordained in 2009, his first –

and current – post was at the Anglican and Methodist Church of St Andrew, Paddock Wood, where he is assistant curate and also an associate minister in the Methodist Church (although the latter will end when he moves to the new benefice). He considered the ministry

and became a lay reader in 1995. With hindsight, he says: “I should probably have gone into the ministry then. The main thing is I have done it now – and I still have a young out- look, despite being 57.” Rev Callway’s wife Alison is also very active in the church

both as a lay reader and in her full-time job in the diocesan training department atRochester. The couple have three grown-

up daughters and five grand- children and love to travel, with annual visits to Switzerland and the opera at Glyndebourne being top of the list. Rev Callway assures that his

role will be one of a “collabora- tor”, building on past traditions, but, coming from the thriving multi-functional parish of St Andrew, his appointment promises to bring new ideas. He said: “Each parish has its

own identity and we need to work together to preserve that, while building upon what is al- ready there. “I have no intention of going in

and ripping things apart. My de- sire is to maintain the long tradi- tion of the churches, while bringing some fresh energy. Peo- ple have such a wide range of contributions to offer. I intend to spend a lot of time listening to people andwill seek to build the future by learning from the past.” Rev Callway was appointed

by the parish patrons, the Rt Hon Lord Cornwallis, the Arch- bishop of Canterbury and the Dean and Chapter of Rochester Cathedral. His induction will take place at a service at St Nicholas’ Church, Linton, at 7.30pm on Friday, June 7.
