Neighbourhood Final warning for gypsy

Watch scheme AN attempt to reviveWest Far- leigh’s Neighbourhood Watch has been launched by the vil- lage’s newly-appointed parish councillor Julie King. The scheme collapsed in

West Farleigh several years ago, when Ivor Maskell retired as co-ordinator due to ill health. Julie said: “Neighbourhood

Watch is about developing local knowledge, community spirit and building links with our local neighbourhood policing officers. The idea is to protect each other by letting the police know about anything which may be considered suspicious.” Schemes receive advice from

the police on crime prevention, andmembers often receive a dis- count on household insurance. Julie is launching the scheme,

with the help of PCSO JoWatts and fellow volunteers Jackie Blake and Lindsey Spencer on April 16. Anyone who wants to get involved can call her on 01622 816977.

Tree grant idea LOCAL scouts are to be asked to chip in with a grant applica- tion for more village trees. Yalding, which has lost a number of mature trees in re- cent years, needs £2,000 to re- instate ancient woodlands – but the application has to come from children.

Ladies get together for sing-song SONGBIRDS flocked from all overKent to awomen’s singing day held at Sutton Valence School More than 30women of all ages joined the day-long challenge to sing

songs from the shows. Organised by professional musicians Anna Lordon and Sarah Geering,

who run Magnifico Music, the day was the second to be held in Maid- stone, following an inaugural event at InvictaGrammar School in the au- tumn.

Sarah said: “The idea is to give ladies, whether they have sung before

or not, an idea of the basics of being in a choir. They don’t need to have a great voice or be able to read music–the main thing is to have fun and realise howenjoyable singing can be.”

MAIDSTONE Council has threatened a gypsy with legal proceedings if she does not re- move her residential caravan from a site in Staplehurst. The council refused Charlotte Smith’s retrospective proposal for a mobile home and stable block at Huntsman’s Stables, Maidstone Road. The decision followed previ-

ous enforcement notices. In its decision notice statement, the council said: “By siting a caravan for residential use on the land, a

criminal offence is being com- mitted. The buildings, fencing, access and hard surfacing are also covered by the notice and are required to be removed and, by virtue of the fact they remain on the land, result in a criminal offence being committed. “The walls and gates are unauthorised and should be re- moved. If the unauthorised de- velopment is not removed from the site, this council will con- sider legal proceedings against the unauthorised development

without further notification.” The warning came after the council criticised the proposal for causing “unacceptable vi- sual harm”. Ms Smith said the caravan

was necessary to allow her fam- ily to look after livestock, but the decision notice claimed the scheme was likely to be detri- mental to highway safety, car- ried a high flood risk for residents and failed to provide adequate security/supervision for either the site or animals.

Dog ban plan DOGS could be banned from a popular walking spot if owners fail to pick up their pets’ poop. The parish council may con-

sider banning dogs from The Kintons in Yalding. Some elderly residents in Laddingford have objected to the “no dogs” order on the Ju- bilee Field, saying it is too far for them to walk to The Lees. But chairman Cllr Geraldine Brown said: “The field is 50% funded by KCC as a children’s playing field – and it is not ap- propriate to allow dogs on an area designated for play.” Cllr Ken Gough suggested sig-

nage at Jubilee Field be investi- gated and new signs be erected on The Kintons as a first warn- ing step.
