Chesapeake, Virginia --Members
of the Chesapeake-Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrated their 35th Anniversary on Saturday, March 1, 2013 at New Light Baptist Church in Chesapeake. The local chapter was founded on March 9, 1978 by twenty charter members who envisioned broadening the reach of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s public service in the cities of Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Annual projects include Delta
GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) a program created to “catch the dreams” of at-risk adolescent girls ages 15-18. EMBODI (Empowering Males to
Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) a program initiated to enhance the lives of African American male teenagers
educationally,
intellectually and socially. Another one of their projects is Delta Academy, a mentorship program for middle school girls that will address the educational and social developmental needs of middle school girls through professional guidance. This program will help to develop their abilities and talents to become change agents in the community.
The Chesapeake- Virginia Beach
Alumnae Chapter has grown from its twenty charter members to almost 190 members. They have had 13 presidents over its thirty-five year history.
