Imagine a living green wall and a streetscape of porous

materials and native landscaping as an entrance to an inspiring gallery of innovative green exhibits and educational displays with green products to touch and experience. Envision multiple projects reusing materials for renovations, upgrading to the most energy efficient systems and saving 70 percent on an electric bill.

Consider a governmental agency responsible for 24,000

acres of property that reuses 100 percent of its wastewater. Picture a state-of-the-art recycling center that increases the kinds of acceptable recyclable materials, increasing revenue to the City of Jacksonville for every ton of recyclables sent to the center.

All of these projects are in our region. Public agencies and

private businesses—small and large—are contributing year- round to the preservation of our natural environment.

Three projects recently undertaken in the city of

Jacksonville demonstrate the region’s commitment to environmental preservation.

In Downtown Jacksonville, plans are underway for a new

Sustainability Resource Center. The center will serve as a community hub for fostering dialogue and encouraging action on sustainability issues and practices. As a Downtown destination, the center’s gallery, filled with innovative green building demonstrations and a robust sustainability library, will attract visitors for special events and educational programs.

JAX Chamber is currently undergoing a redesign project.

Downtown’s New Front Door will enhance the Downtown revitalization effort with its innovative, cutting-edge design. In an effort to promote sustainability, the project includes the most energy efficient heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system available and a host of other natural resource saving features.

Republic Services Recycling Center opened a 70,000

square foot Material Recovery Facility in May 2012. In addition to creating jobs, the new facility significantly increases the amount of recycling in our region. Every ton of materials that goes to this center preserves the life of our landfills and saves taxpayer dollars.
