For those that play regular contact sports, injuries are part and parcel of the game.


Muscles are tweaked, tendons and ligaments are stretched or torn, and cuts and bruises are an occupational hazard.


However, while most of these injuries can’t be avoided, trauma to the teeth can be easily minimised or avoided altogether with the use of mouthguards.


I realise I am preaching to the choir here, our readers will be


among the most vocal proponents of the use of mouthguards to their patients.


But, after several college gaelic football players were seen playing without mouthguards in January – just days after the new rules enforcing mouthguard use for juveniles came in – it is clear that more needs to be done. Football, hurling and rugby are, traditionally, male dominated sports and we all know how bravado and machismo can rule the

roost. But the thought of players putting pressure on their peers not to wear mouthguards so as not to seem weak, is a scary thought. The dental profession needs to be seen to lead the way in making sure that their sports-playing patients and their parents know the dangers, and the costs, of playing without protection.
