new diploma EDUCATION


A new Diploma of Primary Care Dentistry has been launched by the Faculty of Dentistry at the RCSI in collaboration with the Irish Dental Association and the Irish Faculty of Primary Dental Care.


Approved by the Dental Council, the diploma will require candidates to have completed a minimum of 12 months clinical practice following graduation. There will be a strong emphasis on clinical practice within both the multiple choice exam and the written clinical reasoning assessment.

Speaker line-up for 2013 ASM revealed

The Faculty of Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) has announced the speaker programme for its Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) to be held in the faculty’s 50th year.


The title of the 2013 ASM will be ‘Surgical aspects of dental practice’ and confirmed inter- national speakers include, from the US: Dr Karl DeLeeuw, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale; Dr Steve Scri- vani, Tufts University, Boston; Dr Leonard Kaban, Massachu- setts General Hospital, Boston; Dr Tony Pogrel, University of California, San Francisco; and, from the UK, Professor Tara


Renton, Kings College Dental Institute, London.


There will also be a number of domestic speakers including Dr Dermot Canavan, Dr Pat Cleary, Dr Anne O’Donoghue, Dr Gerry Cleary, Dr Peter Cowan and Professor Duncan Sleeman. The 2012 ASM, entitled ‘Aesthetic dentistry’, featured a host of world-class speakers


including Dr Patrick Palacci, who gave the biannual Edward Leo Sheridan Lecture on the subject of ‘Optimal aesthetics in implant dentistry’.
