[EDITOR’S NOTE]
Opposition is often what keeps us in the game, driving us past expectations and personal limits. It’s that guy ten feet ahead in the race that motivates us to kick in that extra leg to the fi nish line. But what happens when you’re the guy cruising ahead? T e urgency is not felt and it’s harder to set your sights on the task at hand when the horizon seems open and expansive. In some instances, smooth sailing can lead to complacency. T is lesson was relived fi rst-hand last year off the coast of Italy with
the headline-grabbing wreck of the colossal ocean-liner, Costa Concordia, when a seemingly routine decision led to a startling disaster. Today, that error has led to a massive salvage operation led by U.S. fi rm Titan Salvage
and Italian marine contractor, Micoperi. Together, the Titan/Micoperi team will work to remove the wreck in one piece, in one attempt with minimal risk, minimal environmental impact and maximum safety of the job. T e parbuckling of the Costa Concordia will be the largest and most unique wreck removal of its kind. We also look at the state of barge traffi c along our nation’s lifeblood, the Mississippi
River. Recent volatility with water levels has had rippling eff ects from source to mouth, and an entire industry has had to adapt to what many are calling a new normal. Finally, in the spirit of competition, the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Area makes room for another inspiring landmark. Set to open this coming Labor Day after over a decade of engineering and construction, the new Bay Bridge will serve as the world’s longest self-anchored suspension bridge, and a formidable engineering rival to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Whether it’s personal or business, competition is healthy and necessary for success. Just because you can’t see anyone in front of you to push you doesn’t mean that you can’t hear the footsteps behind you! Stay in touch and let us know what’s new with your business or if any milestone celebrations are in the works. As always, thank you for being a part of the Exchange!
