NCC secures top gun as tech director


The NCC (National Composites Centre) has appointed Professor Mike Hinton to the position of technology director with responsibility for the company’s technology and research strategy and leadership. He joins the executive team of the company reporting to NCC chief executive Peter Chivers.


Professor Hinton has an international reputation as a highly experienced technical director and Special Merit Scientist with a unique breadth of expertise, coupled with an extensive track record of creating/leading high- performance capability groups that deliver a diverse and complex range of solutions to meet customer and business needs.


Commenting on the appointment, NCC chief executive Mr Chivers said: “Professor Hinton is a practical example of the ethos behind the NCC, a highly creative and collaborative individual with both academic reputation and technical industrial experience. I am delighted to have Mike on board particularly at this time when the NCC is still undergoing substantial expansion and rapid acquisition of new industrial members. He brings with him not just the respect of the worldwide composites industry but more than 40 years of expertise and knowledge.”


Hinton, who previously worked at the MOD, DERA, QinetiQ and its predecessors for over 40 years said: “I’m so excited to be taking on the technology director post at the NCC. I fundamentally believe in the importance of the centre to the UK composites industry. It is vital that research is collaborative and that innovation is fostered and supported to ensure that the sector remains competitive in the global market.”

Stakeholder perspectives on the Patent Box, and to what extent it will encourage companies to exploit patented technologies within the UK. Patent enforcement – looking at the future of the Patents County Court, as well as recent mediation initiatives such as the Patent Opinions Service. To what extent the EU’s Unitary Patent Court can support UK interests – with perspectives from legal practitioners, multinationals and SMEs. Remaining concerns to be addressed at a European level – including issues relating to judicial appointments, funding arrangements, litigation costs and rules of procedure.
