qualifications, at all levels, can lead to the most rewarding jobs for anyone who is willing to work to get them.
Over the last decade, STEM Ambassadors have done a lot to support and encourage young people in the UK. They have been responsible for almost 100,000 engagements with young people in activities ranging from running STEM Clubs, helping with engineering competitions and awards, providing mentoring, career guidance or role model examples. In total, the programme has helped many thousands of schools in the UK and directly encouraged millions of young people to see the value and wonder in STEM.
Successful engagement between employers and schools through STEMNET programmes has led to fantastic examples of students developing their skills through STEM projects, including award-winning engineering competitions.
Teachers at Broxburn Academy, a state- funded secondary school in West Lothian, Scotland were looking for ways to improve engagement with STEM both inside and outside the classroom and the STEM Challenges provided the exciting opportunity to make this happen.
STEM Challenges are a series of national
competitions inspired by London 2012. Ten Challenges were coordinated by STEMNET and supported by LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games) and DfE (the Department for Education) that invited students from across the UK to develop STEM- related projects, inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The STEM Club at Broxburn Academy took part in three STEM Challenges, including a competition that asked students to design a human-powered engineering invention for creating the spark to light the Paralympic Flame. The Academy beat competition from across the UK to secure first place at the
