///EQUIPMENT CORNER New standards for safety in the yard

Insurers the TT Club, the Port Equipment

Manufacturers’

Association (PEMA) and the International Cargo Handling Co- ordination Association (ICHCA) have published recommended safety standards for container yard equipment. The three leading exponents

of improved risk management in ports and terminals have identified additional safety devices for yard equipment, along

with other operational changes that reduce injuries and fatalities and prevent cargo and property damage. The three organisations have

in the past united in campaigning for increased measures to be adopted

to address common

safety issues arising in quay crane operations and have now turned their attention to container yard equipment. Using claim analysis data provided by TT Club, they

point out that 53% of the total cost of operational related claims were caused by yard equipment and that accidents account for three quarters of the cost of injury claims in terminal facilities. Two thirds of costs related to fires were also attributed to yard equipment. The Club’s data also shows that

up to 1,600 claims amounting to US$130million resulted from such incidents. Changes to operational procedure, additional training

and/or fitting safety equipment to machinery could significantly reduce this bill. For example, liſt trucks were

involved in 30% of the bodily injury claims analysed, mainly the result of trucks reversing into people. Anti-collision devices could potentially have saved $30 million and prevented 51 workers from being killed or suffering serious injury over the last six years.

Felixstowe firm adds straddle carrier

Felixstowe Warehousing, part of the John Good Group of companies, has invested around £150,000 in a Combiliſt container straddle carrier, one of the first of its kind in the UK. It is used to move and stack

ISO containers and will improve efficiency at the 205,000sq ſt warehousing complex. The Combiliſt can liſt up to 35 tons - more than adequate for the vast

majority of customer

requirements. The investment also includes staff training ahead of the

equipment going into service

in early 2013. Group managing director Alan Platt said the new equipment would make manoeuvring containers around the site much safer and easier. The ability to liſt containers

from chassis to the floor at Felixstowe Warehousing will also increase operational efficiency, reduce time for loading and unloading of containers and make better use of space, as well as allowing undercover loading and unloading. There will also be no need for mobile ramps.

Cooper signs crane deal

Warwickshire-based Cooper Specialised Handling has signed a new partnership with Finnish

crane manufacturer Mantsinen Group Oy in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Dealing with unwanted visitors

A mobile high security fence from Perimeter Asset Protection Systems that prevents ‘ram raiding’ by trucks and large vehicles and used at the London Olympic Games is also ideal for airports, freight terminals and ports, says Perimeter Asset Protection Systems. PAPS, a joint venture by systems

providers Zaun, Hardstaff Barriers and Highway Care, points out that no below-ground foundations are required and the fencing can be used on soſt and hard standing.

They can be up to five metres high and can incorporate above ground foundation pedestrian and vehicle gates, turnstiles and access portals, along with CCTV columns and PID systems. Multi-Fence is available for

rental or purchase. With either option, Zaun installers set up the system to ensure the products are installed and maintained appropriately. Delivery is available nationwide and overseas through a comprehensive distribution network.

The agreement covers the

sale of Mantsinen’s complete range of hydraulic cranes, as well as the specialist log handlers manufactured by the

Finnish company, and

includes servicing of Mantsinen equipment already in the UK and Ireland as well as spare parts. Cooper SH already distributes

the SMV range of forkliſts, container handlers and reach- stackers manufactured by Konecranes in Sweden. Cooper SH director, David

Cooper, added that hydraulic cranes or material handlers were a quick and cost-effective alternative to rope based options, oſten the default choice in the UK up till now.

Tractor no. 400 for Terberg

Terberg DTS has supplied its 400th used terminal handling machine to the UK market, following a three- vehicle deal with RMS Trent Ports’ Flixborough Wharf. Flixborough has taken delivery of two used Terberg YT220 distribution tractors, as well as a new Terberg RT283 Ro Ro dockside shunter. It has also placed a follow-up order for a further three additional used YT distribution tractors for delivery early in 2013. The

two YT220s delivered

in August are being used for pulling semi-trailers and low deck roll trailers to stocking sheds,

Cargotec says its latest model heavy terminal tractors are the most powerful in the industry. The new Kalmar TR626i and TR632i units can pull heavy trailers up steep ramps onto ro-ro ships or haul long trains of trailers. They have also been designed for minimum downtime with a 300-litre fuel tank so they can run longer

without refuelling At the same time, the Volvo

engines use Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to deliver near-zero harmful particulate emissions. The cab has also been designed for better visibility with an asymmetrical seating arrangement to give the driver a better view from the side window.

Kalmars for Tilbury

Forth Ports has ordered 14 Kalmar straddle carriers as part of its upgrade at London Container Terminal in Tilbury. The delivery is scheduled for April next year.

The machines are equipped with Kalmar’s standard W-type front cabin

complete for container

handling with four-high stacking and 50-tonne load capacity.

Banish winter woes with new Krone system

Krone has developed a new trailer Ice Protect System for trailers that can be operated from a control panel on the front wall of the unit. Using an air hose, the curtain roof is raised by about 17.5cm at the press of a button, preventing the accumulation of water and snow, and hence ice. Before setting off, the hose is lowered by pressing the button

or when activating the brake, thus allowing the curtain roof to return to its original state. The system is available for all Krone curtain semi-trailers and can also be retrofitted. Ice sheets flying off the roof of

an HGV during the winter time are a common hazard and few service stations provide de-icing equipment.

Heavy duty Cargotec

replacing two of the company’s older distribution tractors. The Terberg RT283 Ro Ro

tractor is being used mainly for ro ro work and went into service in September.
