A burning injustice: rail operators pay for blazing tunnel trucks

The Rail Freight Group is asking why through rail services – unlike truck- carrying shuttles – are having to pay a security surcharge for the Channel Tunnel, despite the fact that all the recent fire incidents have been caused by trucks, not trains. RFG says that the security

charge, as outlined in Eurotunnel’s Network

Statement for 2014,

comprises a charge for Security at Calais Frethun from €600 per train and a charge for ‘security services’ at Calais Frethun from Europorte Channel of around €150 per train. The tunnel was closed once

again on 29 November aſter a fire broke out on a lorry being carried on board a shuttle train, although there were no injuries and it was

reopened shortly aſterwards, unlike previous incidents which have shut the tunnel for long periods. RFG said that the latest incident

“highlighted once again the danger of carrying trucks on open wagons in a confined tunnel with air blowing past them at 80mph,” and pointing out that it was the fourth

fire in the Channel Tunnel since it opened, all of which were thought to be caused by road trucks being carried on open wagons. RFG pointed out that while the

risk of the tunnel being closed for weeks or months hurt rail freight and its customers badly, “trucks can always use ferries when the tunnel is closed.”
