Play area expansion

Support for

THE parish council is hoping to extend the play area on Aver- enches Road between Bearsted Park and Grove Green by buy- ing the area of road to the east. KCC valued the land at £500, but said it would cost an addi-

tional £5,000 to apply to have a cul-de-sac road near the play area officially closed off. The valuation cost the parish council £250. The parish council should be able to fund the cost through section 106 funds arising out of the Edelin Road development. It was decided not to proceed further with discussion or con- sultation until the parish council has the cash, which is cur- rently held by Maidstone Council.

Meetings normally held on the third Monday of each month at the Marriott Tudor Park Hotel. Public welcome.

CHAIRMAN:Daniel Skinner CLERK: Sherrie Babington 01634 867173

New recruit FATHER-OF-TWO Ian Shelley (44) has joined Thurnham Parish Council. The design engineer, who has lived in Bearsted for 10 years, said: “I feel I can bring the view of the young family.” Mr Shelley

and his wife have one child at Thurnham In- fant School and one at Roseacre Junior School.

Speed move COUNCILLOR Mike Stark asked whether 30mph speed limit signs on the A20 Ashford Road could be moved in a bid to slow drivers down. He said: “Some people come belting down the hill and are confronted with a 30mph limit. If we shift it to the east side of Otham Lane, people will get more warning.” Cllr Whittle said she would

pass the question to her col- leagues at KCC.

Trees delayed TREE planting that the council had been planning to carry out on Averenches Road will now not happen until next year, due to the high price of trees and the fact the ground is frozen solid. Cllr Ted Denham said he had spoken to people who lived in the area and most were happy for the council to plant trees. There used to be lots of trees

in the area, but now there are only two.

Warm welcome for salt bins SALT bins at the top and bottom of Port Close have been well used during the wintry weather. Chairman Cllr Daniel Skinner was among residents who gritted the roads before, during and after Jan- uary’s heavy snowfall, and he thanked everybody who helped out. Cllr Ted Denham said it was great having rock salt in the bins

this year, rather than sand. He added: “Last year the road looked like the Sahara.” Unfortunately, the council had heard about some drivers taking grit away in their cars for personal use and using it for their drives rather than to treat public roads and footpaths.

lights on path PEOPLE living close to an unlit footpath that leads to the mid- dle of Weavering Street have told the parish council they would like street lighting. Cllr Skinner said the council

could not fund the street light- ing, but might be able to sup- port a planning application to have it installed. It was decided to refer the residents to KCC to see if it could provide lighting.

Yellow lines

consultation COUNTY councillor Jenny Whittle said a consultation about whether to put double yellow lines in Hockers Lane had not been carried out prop- erly.

Residents living in the area

told her they were not con- sulted by KCC over whether the lines should be painted higher up the road. She has asked the council to carry out the consultation again.

Sign repaired THE interactive speed sign in Ware Street, which reminds drivers to stick to the 30mph speed limit, wasworking again after being out of action for sev- eral months.
