Spreading Christmas cheer The Villager

Plan for land RESIDENTS in Bearsted are being asked what they would like to see done with a piece of public open space that has been bought by the parish council. The strip of land behind

Mynn Crescent, was acquired from developers Taylor Wim- pey, following completion of their housebuilding in the area. It is presently in a “natural state”, but could be put to a va- riety of uses. Suggestions are being sought

and ideas should be given to any member of the parish coun- cil or emailed to clerk@bearst- edparishcouncil.co.uk

SOME 66 senior citizens attended a free Christ- mas lunch and social, organised by the area’s community warden and PCSO in conjunction with the parish council and local sponsors. Warden Adam McKinley said: “The aim of the project was to raise awareness of how many eld- erly people do not have a Christmas meal or fam- ily around for the holidays.” Entertainment was provided by singer Alyssa El-Shamma (who came second inMaidstone’s Got Talent), the Holy Cross Church Choir, with tap dancing from “Sharon and Audrey”.

Checking up BEARSTED Parish Council is planning to tighten up proce- dures for the new year. Members are to keep a check

on work that is commissioned before settling invoices, follow- ing concerns about processes and procedures in recent times. As custodians of public money, the council has agreed it needs to be more robust and rigorous, checking that work is carried out to its satisfaction. Cllr Bernard Carine pointed

outthatthiswas notjusta problem relating to Bearsted: even KCC had been caught out paying for work it believed had been done, when it had not.

He also thanked the Bearsted Men’s Group and

other volunteers who gave up their time to help, including Debbie Shephard, Peter Judges and PCSO Jim Stevens.

Pothole issues COMMUNITY warden Adam McKinley has been on the prowl around the village – mak- ing a note of dangerous pot- holes. A number of elderly people

who he visited over the Christ- mas holiday expressed fears about falling andAdamplans to send a list of the offending pot- holes to Kent Highways. SnowAngels is oncemore up

and running to help the most vulnerable get food and medi- cine if the weather turns bad. Similarly, Home Angels will

help with small maintenance jobs for those people who need support.

Making mark KCC hasmoney to help replace and repaint some of the faded white lines in the village. The parish council has priori-

tisedWare Street and the roads leading from it, Ashford Road and the roads leading from it, the Landway (a white line down themiddle) and theWill- ington Street/Ashford Road junction.

Hydrant inspection THE council is to undertake a survey of the fire hydrants in the village. Kent Fire and Rescue at- tended a blaze at Boughton Mal- herbe last year and was unable to find the hydrants.
