Welcome 16 8

WELCOME D

ISSUE SEVENTY: FEBRUARY / MARCH 2013

avid Willetts, the Minister for University and Science, is striving to make England “the best place in the world for university-business collaboration”, while the issue of employability also remains sharply in focus. We decided it was therefore timely to take a look at how two corporate giants are successfully collaborating with higher education institutions in an effort to tackle both these issues. The University of Lincoln is reaping the rewards of a partnership with engineering Goliath, Siemens – a union described by John Hayes, former Minister for Further Education and Skills, as a “perfect marriage” – and claims that its rise into the top 50 UK universities is a direct result of such partnerships. Andrew Stevenson, Director of Research and Enterprise, University of Lincoln, stops by to share with us how both parties are seeing huge benefits from joining forces (page 15). Logica’s Alexandra Sinton also tells us how, five years after forming a partnership with The University of Winchester to deliver a fully sponsored degree programme, 23 students have graduated and retention rates upon graduation stand at 91% (page 14). Impressive stuff. Further afield, AGR’s Chief Executive takes some time out to tell us about his recent trip down under with AGR Chairman, Terence Perrin, where the pair visited Auckland to represent AGR at the New Zealand Association of Graduate Employers’ (NZAGE) first annual conference, and The International Graduate Recruitment and Development Association (INGRADA) summit, not to mention calling in to Australia on the way to attend the Australian Association of Graduate Employers Ltd’s (AAGE) annual conference in Melbourne (page 8). Phew. Despite a hectic schedule, Carl found time to make notes

about his counterparts’ approach to conferences, claiming that he has “no qualms about taking and adapting the best practice I come across to improve our conference programme.” Come along to Celtic Manor in July and see for yourself… Danielle Grufferty, NUS Vice President (Society and Citizenship), is also in residence this month as the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the National Union of Students’ (NUS) year-long campaign to protect interns from abuse draws to a close. She states that unpaid internships are still widely seen as an important route into key professions and there is still work to be done in 2013. Elsewhere, we have introduced a new column, ‘A Day in the Life’’ which will see a ‘who’s who’ of graduate recruitment share the minutiae of their typical day, including, it seems, their favourite places to lunch (page 30)… The ever engaging Bob Athwal is in the hot seat in ‘In Conversation With’, talking about his pretty unique CV (page 28), while he also features on page 6, talking about how the University of Leicester has implemented a ‘no prep, no entry’ policy at campus events to encourage more productive meetings. There is of course, even more, and we look forward to hearing your feedback on some of the issues discussed, as well as some of the topics being talked about on our LinkedIn and Twitter pages. Don’t be shy – join the conversation!
