school students reflect on their individual experiences in the school’s worshipping community and recorded the re- sponses. The end product is a booklet that reflects the way the school’s lower school division approaches and practices worship together, all while keeping in mind the first book- let, Filling Our Classrooms with Spices.

rom January 14-18, the lower school division cel- ebrated the launch of the new booklet, Seeking the Light. Throughout the week, reading buddies across

all grades read the booklet together for the first time. After students finished reading, “candle cookies” were passed out to snack on.

In addition, each student, with the help of their teacher, worked from a template to draw a picture of themself, which they adhered to a mural. The mural shows the route to and from the Race Street Friends Meetinghouse as well as the Meetinghouse itself. At the end of the week, lower school students gathered in the theatre for a culminating event, a slideshow featuring photos of the students embrac- ing the new booklet from the week.

Both the lower school faculty and student worship and ministry committee worked to create a booklet for students, using quotes and drawings from “partner reflection” ses- sions. Middle- and upper school students helped lower

Philadelphia Dear Parents,

I

am writing to inform you of a change in policy for the kindergarten registration process at Penn Alexander Community School. Until now, the registration process at Penn Alexander has been conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, causing dozens of parents and guardians to line up outside of the school building days before the opening of registration. In an effort to make this process more efficient and less challenging for parents in catchment area, the School Dis- trict of Philadelphia has decided to conduct a lottery to de- termine kindergarten enrollment for Penn Alexander. The lottery process will be piloted this spring to imple- ment the policy district- wide next year. Under the new policy, parents who live within the Penn Alexander catchment area and wish to enroll students in kindergarten at Penn Alexander Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year, will participate in the process out- lined below:

Submit an application to the main office at Penn Alexan- der Elementary School. Parents can obtain an application online at www.philasd.org/forms/EH-40.pdf or in the main office. The deadline to submit an application for en- rollment is Monday, April 1st

.

In early April, the School District will conduct a lottery. A student ID number will be created for each application and the lottery process will rank the students randomly by ID number.

Following the lottery, the District will conduct outreach to confirm that students who are eligible for enrollment based on their lottery rank, also meet the residency and age re- quirements to be enrolled at the school. Confirmation letters will be sent in late April.

Please contact the Office of Student Placement at 215-400- 4290 for more information. I look forward to working with you through this process.

Sincerely, William R. Hite Jr., Ed.D.
