Car park plans for village school
EAST Farleigh Parish Council has applied to establish a 72-space car park on agricul- tural land south of the village school in Vic- arage Lane. The council’s village plan, which was completed in 2009, identified a need to ad- dress the parking and safety problem along Vicarage Road caused by school and event- related traffic. When residents were asked what was most important to them, the top five responses were all traffic-related. Atotal of 60 residents signed a petition in- dicating their support for the scheme, which is in open countryside and thus contrary to

Maidstone Council’s development plan. A supporting statement said: “The pro-
posed car park is first and foremost intended to reduce the school’s parking problems, with vehicles currently spilling on to Vic- arage Lane during peak periods, ie the school run. “The influx of vehicle numbers during
these periods currently causes a high level of congestion along Vicarage Lane which prevents the free flow of traffic and compro- mises the safety of students and motorists. “The need for additional parking goes be- yond the school. Parking is also exacerbated
during community events, particularly when the recreation ground is used, for ex- ample, on sports day or for the annual vil- lage fete. The car park is therefore also required to improve the parking situation for the wider community, with all set to benefit from the proposal. “The scheme requires a black-top Tarmac entrance to aid vehicle movement in and out of the site. Fencing of an appropriate rural appearance will be erected around the perimeter, along with hedge planting of na- tive species to maintain the rural scenic quality of the area.”
Statue may pay tribute to former regiment
A BRONZE statue of a soldier is to be built outside Maidstone Mu- seum to commemorate a former regiment that was based in the town. The Queen’s Own Buffs Regimental Association has gained plan-
ning permission to place the 1.07m-high tribute to a Queen’s Own RoyalWest Kent soldier, in Malayan uniform, in the museum court- yard offStFaith’s Street. The Royal West Kent Regiment, based in Maidstone, was active
from 1881 to 1961 when itwas amalgamated with The Buffs (Royal EastKentRegiment) to form The Queen’sOwnBuffs, TheRoyalKent Regiment. Artist Peter Birkett has been commissioned to create the statue,
whichwould stand on a granite plinth. From 1951 to 1954 one battalion of the Queen’s Own RoyalWest
Kent Regiment contributed to the security forces that successfully contained the communist guerrilla uprising in Malaya. It was one of its last missions beforemerging with the EastKent regiment and will be remembered by the uniform the soldierwillwear. The Regimental Association said the statue will complement a
nearby Ghurka tribute and the colour of the surrounding buildings and landscaping. It will be funded privately.
