determining what benefits they get,” says Katie Lamb, vice president of human resources. “Having an EAP is important in an ASC setting. An EAP helps employees with life chal- lenges. It’s helpful to include in ben- efits packages. We use an outsourced benefits provider, and employees can call their 800 number with questions. It helps because the center adminis- trator doesn’t have time to handle questions and he or she doesn’t need to know everything that’s going on in the employees’ lives.”


Strength in Numbers Since ASCs are typically small busi- nesses, in the current health care in- surance marketplace, independently owned facilities can face a challenge finding affordable, competitive ben- efits plans. “That’s one of the reasons


why our ASCs are partnered with Am- Surg,” says Lamb. “We can help them get richer benefits than they could get as a smaller employer.” Wellik agrees. “The way USPI


structures its benefits is that although our facilities have their own names, the employees all work for a subsidiary of USPI that can offer a benefits program to cover all our employees,” he says. “We have roughly 10,000 employees, and that large number of employees helps us keep our costs down.” Symbion operates in a similar fash-


ion. “We don’t brand,” Terry says. “When we acquire a facility, we keep its former name, believing that the employees and management have worked hard to build its reputation in the community.” When you take care of your em-


ployees, they take care of your com- pany,” Wellik concludes.
