MESSAGE FROM THE CEO A New Year and New Opportunities for ASCs H
appy New Year and welcome to 2013. As this new year begins, faced with a fragile economy and a rapidly changing health care marketplace, ASCs and all health care providers are finding that many of the old
ways of doing business that have led to our success in the past are no longer working. It’s time for new approaches and ideas. In this issue of ASC Focus, you will find some of each. This year, ASCA will work with a new Congress and a broad coalition of related
interest groups to attain our advocacy goals. You can read more about some of the initiatives we will pursue in ASCA Board President Nap Gary’s column on page 8. You can also find more about the Medicare payment and regulatory issues that ASCs and ASCA will address this year in Jonathan Beal’s summary of Medicare’s final payment rule on page 26. With renewed national interest in the many provisions of the Patient Protection
and Affordable Care Act that President Barack Obama championed during his first term, ASCA will bring you more information on the ways that ASCs will need to adapt. For one ASC executive’s perspective on the provider partnerships being established in tandem with the accountable care organizations created in that act, go to ASCA Board Vice President Mike Guarino’s article on page 10. For more about some of the tax implications for small businesses included in that act, see page 16. This issue of ASC Focus also deals with several of the day-to-day challenges
that you face in your ASC. Learn about making a renovation/expansion project a success on page 12, mastering the secrets of good customer service on page 18 and empowering your board members to make the decisions they need to make for your ASC on page 22. In the coming year, I encourage you to take full advantage of all of the benefits
