BY JOE HORNIG Beginner and Advanced Sessions Offered at ASCA 2013 The program for this year’s annual meeting—ASCA 2013—includes sev- eral “beginner” and “advanced” ses- sions in the areas of clinical bench- marking, nursing documentation, peer review and financial benchmarking. For clinical benchmarking, for
example, Sandra Jones, CASC, will present “Clinical Benchmarking 101: The ABCs of Benchmarking.” Those who attend this session will review in- ternal and external benchmarking op- tions, resources and methods to begin an effective benchmarking program. Jones, along with Ann Geier, RN, CASC, will also present an advanced session titled “Clinical Benchmark- ing 201: Moving from Data Collec- tion to Performance Improvement.” Attendees will learn how to take spe-

ries, “Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Are We Pushing the Envelope?,” will fo- cus on obstructive sleep apnea in am-
bulatory surgery and cover strategies for identifying and managing these patients in the outpatient setting. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8 at 1 p.m. ET and will be presented by Michael T. Walsh, MD, assistant professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medi- cine in Rochester, Minnesota. The second webinar, “How to Add
Capacity to an ASC When You Are Out of Space in a CON State,” will explain how to analyze your ASC’s physical plant, hours of operation, ef- ficiencies, block utilization, release time and partner relationships to in- crease capacity when you are out of space in a CON state. The webinar is scheduled for Tuesday, January 22 at 1 p.m. ET and will be presented by Reed Martin, chief operating officer of Surgical Management Professionals. New Four-Day Specialty Seminar Program Coming This Fall ASCA will offer four days of specialty seminars in October 2013. Full-day seminars on quality reporting and pur- chasing and inventory management will be featured as well as a two-day seminar on finance and accounting. The CASC Review Course will be of- fered on the first day of the program, and the CASC exam will be adminis- tered on the last day.
