Victorian Christmas Market - Truro

The annual Victorian Christmas Market is once again coming to Truro for the festive period.

This popular and established event, now in its eighth year, just keeps on getting better with over 70 traders and producers offering a wide selection of artisan arts, crafts and food and drink to tempt the most discerning of buyers.

What makes this event even more special is that not only is it the biggest such market in the region over the Christmas period but that all of its traders dress in Victorian attire.

The huge marquee, situated on Lemon Quay in the centre of Truro, is decorated to give the feel of an old-fashioned Victorian street market with animal pens, street vendors and carol singers.

Martyn Davies of Deborah Martyn Events Ltd, who organise this show as well as the Truro late night shopping street markets and the Saturday street markets says:

‘This event is the high point of our calendar and we are always excited to organise the Victorian Christmas market, as we feel that it highlights the very best of our local traders and gives them a chance to put on a show for their customers at the

same time as getting down to the very serious business of offering the perfect gifts for Christmas’.

The marquee is divided into two areas: a food hall and an art, crafts and gifts hall. There are 30 food stalls selling everything that you need for a festive feast including meats, cakes, cheeses, chocolates, preserves and wines.

The 50 craft stalls include jewellers, textile artists, photographers, potters,

metalworkers and candle makers.

The market will run from 11-16 December on Lemon Quay, Truro. Entry is free.

Padstow - the perfect winter foodie break

Start your festive season with a trip to Padstow’s annual Christmas Festival from

Friday 7 to Sunday 9 December.

Set around the picturesque harbour of this North Cornish fishing town, the three day festival promises an array of seasonal treats including Christmas lights and decorations, Cornish produce, fireworks; and late night shopping.

Famous for its food, Padstow will be hosting some of the UK’s biggest gastronomic heroes including: Rick Stein and his son Jack; Angela Hartnett; Nathan Outlaw; Mitch Tonks; Mark Sargeant; Paul Ainsworth and Chris Eden; who will all be cooking up a storm in the Chefs’ Theatre.

A traditional Christmas market will be on the quayside bustling with local producers and Cornish crafts.

Alongside ales, meats, jams and cheeses, restaurants including Fifteen Cornwall and The Seafood Restaurant will be tempting festival goers with tasty treats and Christmas puds.

Visitors will be able to soak up the merry atmosphere and shop for Christmas gifts with many stores and restaurants around the town offering special festival discounts.

Santa will be in residence in his magical grotto at The Padstow Institute and children will be able to take part in special festive workshops throughout the weekend.

The lantern parade and firework display on Friday evening are also a festival highlight not to be missed.

The excitement continues throughout the weekend with plenty of live music including an appearance from Cornwall’s Fisherman’s Friends, famous for their sea shanties and Cornish folk songs.

The annual Santa Fun Run is set to raise spirits on Saturday. Last year 240 runners dressed in Santa suits raised over £5000 for Cornwall Hospice Care.

With scenic estuary views, carols around the Christmas tree and live music, visitors can soak up the merry atmosphere whilst escaping the hustle and bustle of city life.

Christmas lights, Padstow Christmas lights of Mousehole

Every Christmas the people of Mousehole decorate their houses and the harbour with Christmas lights and decorations.

As a result, visitors flock from all over the UK and beyond to enjoy this festival of colour. The purpose of the display is to raise money for charity.

This event, which becomes a major village party, attracts visitors from both the surrounding district and from all over the world.

In late September the village begins preparation for their lights, which have been going on for nearly 40 years.

The display usually starts around the middle of December and continues to the end of the first week in January.

The lights are switched on at around 5pm and are turned off at 11pm. The harbour lights (pictured below) looks magical!

A few days before Christmas 1981 the coaster Union Star got into difficuty and the local lifeboat was launched from Penlee station.

Sadly, both the ship and the lifeboat were lost, together with the crew and passengers from the coaster and the whole crew of the lifeboat.

On December 19 each year, the lights are switched off, in memory of those who gave their lives
