News & Notes for Western Riders
Black-Eyed Susan Circuit Going Strong After 48 Years
by Ashley Schaeff er T e fi rst Maryland State Quarter Horse As- sociation State Show and Futurities were held on September 5, 1964 at the Howard County Fairgrounds. T ere were only two classes: Year- ling Fillies and Yearling Colts/Geldings. What a diff erence from the 2012 Black-Eyed Susan Circuit! Spread over three days, the Black-Eyed Su-
san Circuit, held this year at Frying Pan Park in Herndon, Virginia, off ered 87 classes and over $7,500 in cash awards and prizes. From Hal- ter to Hunter Under Saddle to Reining, there was a class for every rider and the very versatile Quarter Horse. Friday, August 31, began with the MSQHA
Introductory AQHA and Open Show, judged by Catherine Jennings of West Virginia. T e Introductory Show allows riders who have not shown in AQHA the opportunity to come and test the waters at a Quarter Horse show without all the stress that comes with showing at the next level. With over 145 entries, com- petition was fi erce, but all exhibitors were very supportive of each other and they all had a fan- tastic time. Saturday and Sunday were held in a single day/double-judged format where exhibitors had the chance to show in all classes both show days with two judges Saturday and two diff er- ent judges on Sunday. Once again, everyone showed up with his or her game face on ready to show. Saturday’s judges were Elizabeth Haynes of Florida and Daren Wright of Ohio. MSQHA was happy to see that some of the exhibitors from the previ- ous day’s Intro Show had stuck around to apply what they had learned the day before to the Black-Eyed Susan Cir- cuit. It was a tight race for the All Around and High Point awards after day one of the circuit. Sunday’s judges were Dennis Sigler and Richard Spinks,
both
from Texas. With the fi nal day of the circuit nearing a close,
rid-
ers and horses alike were persevering in the competition to prove to the judges which horse and rider combinations should go home with the All Around and High Point Awards. T e total number of entries for all three days was over 650. Of course our horse show would not be as successful without the multiple vol-

State High School Rodeo team. In June, he walked away from the PA State Finals as the 2012 Tie Down Roping PA State Champion. In July, Spencer traveled with the team to Rock Springs, WY to compete in the 64th Annual National High School Finals Ro- deo in the Tie Down Calf Roping division. In the fi rst round, he was ranked 51st out of 142 competitors. His time in the second round knocked him down to 90th place; however, the average of the two placed him in 49th overall. Spencer’s next stop was the American Quarter Horse
Youth Association World Show in Oklahoma City in August. T ere he placed seventh in the Tie Down class. At the All American Quarter Horse Con-
gress in October, Spencer placed sixth with Jarvis Bar Greg and 11th with Pure Blue Boon in the Youth Calf Roping class. He also placed eighth in the Youth Team Roping Heading competition. Spencer also competed in the Team Roping Heeling classes, which is new for him. He only started heeling this past August. At Congress, Spencer placed sixth and 11th.
Maryland Youth Place Well at the AQHYA World Show
Spencer Bramble was not the only Maryland
youth to place well at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Show on Au- gust 3-11 in Oklahoma City. Mark Mowbray of Rhodesdale showed A Good Storm in Per- formance Halter Geldings and made it to the fi nals. He earned a total score of 136 points to fi nish in sixth place. Brooks Nicole Spicer of Church Creek placed in the fi nals as well, earn- ing 26th with Broke Machine. Brooks also showed Lighten Up Rainbo in the Aged Mares class and earned a spot in the fi nals. T e sorrel mare placed 12th overall and is owned by T omas Spicer, Sr.
Maryland Breeds Top Quarter Horses Although many consider Maryland a T or-
oughbred state, some of the country’s top Quarter Horses are also produced within its borders. Robert Hershman of Swanton bred the champion Performance Halter Mare at the American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Show. Cowgirls Do It Best is a sorrel mare by RL Best of Sudden and out of RL Lit- tle Bit. She was shown by her owner, Brogan Mixon T ompson of Ocala, FL.
