When Terror Comes to the Workplace

Incidents of workplace violence erupt 50 to 70 times every year across the country -- often with recurring patterns that shed light on the gunmen and what drives them. The typical killer is a middle-age white man. He is socially isolated and feels justified in revenge when he gets laid off or passed over for promotion. And, most importantly, he leaves a trail of "bread crumbs" that preceded and could have even predicted his deadly rampage. The hints include problems at home, depres- sion and growing complaints -- or even threats -- about managers. The key to preventing future tragedies is understanding the problems that precede violence and creating workplaces that can identify struggling workers and support them. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers killing co-workers, customers, or clients is the second-most common circumstance of workplace murder. While overall workplace deaths have declined over the past 20 years, the number involving workers killing co-workers hasn't changed. The ultimate prevention strategy is to foster work environments in which employees are respected, bullying isn't tolerated and concerns can be safely expressed. Workers also need balance and can't be so tied to their offices that work becomes their lives.

Wisdom: The Free, Eternal Solution To Bullying Horrific Suicides Continue Because We Are Not Teaching Children Wisdom. by Izzy Kalman

Hardly a week goes by before we learn of another tragic case of a child committing suicide because he/she couldn’t tolerate being bullied. And the public’s response is always the same: we need to pass tougher anti-bullying laws.

Haven’t we noticed that children continue suffering despite thirteen years of anti-bullying warfare ignited by the Columbine shooting. Year after year children are bombarded with anti-bullying programs, lessons, posters, movies, books, songs and bracelets. They have signed pledges stating they won’t engage in bullying and will stand up for victims. They have been informed of the punishments they will receive if they violate anti-bullying policies. They have heard their favorite celebrities rally against bullying.

Yet bullying continues. The great irony is that the solution is simple and has been known for thousands of years. The solution is not government but wisdom. It is about knowing how to be a victor rather than a

victim. When kids acquire this simple wisdom, no one can bully them and any thoughts of committing violence against themselves or others evaporates.

Homeland Security Releases Active Shooter Manual

The US Department of Homeland Security has released an "Active Shooter: How to Respond" manual that contains a profile of an active shooter and what you could do to prepare for a workplace shooting situation. It also goes into the roles and responsibilities of HR, facilities managers, and managers.

Most of us don't see "Active Shooter" as something that can happen in our workplace, and although it is smart to be prepared and take a look at the easy-to-understand tips in the manual, you need to realize that this type of workplace violence is very rare and unlikely to happen to you.
