Last chance to enter Director of the Year awards


Business leaders are being urged not to miss the opportunity to enter the prestigious 2012 London and South East Director of the Year awards run by the Institute of Directors (IoD) and sponsored by PwC


Open to members and non-members of the IoD, the awards welcome entries from business leaders from the whole of London and the South East of England. The awards bring together company directors from a variety of backgrounds and recognise their qualities as business leaders.


Nominations have to be made at www.iod.com/south/awards by Friday, November 30, with the deadline for entries following on December 31. Self-nominations are welcomed.


Winners go on to take part in the IoD’s national awards, which this year saw four directors from London and the South East, including two from Reading, receive commendations for their work. • Alastair Storey, chairman and chief executive of WSHRichard of Reading, was highly commended in the Director of the Year (large company) category;


• Martin Howe, chief executive of Global Immersion of Haywards Heath, was highly commended in the Global Director of the Year category;


• Boris Wolstenhome, CEO of AJ Walter Aviation of Horsham, was highly commended in the Young Director of the Year category;


• Chris Bartlett, managing director of GCS Recruitment of Reading, was highly commended in the Coporate Responsibility category.


This year’s London and the South East awards features categories for:


Director of the Year (large company) This category is open to directors from FTSE and other large listed companies.


Director of the Year (small and medium


company) This awards category is open to directors of companies with 250 or fewer employees.


Young Director of the Year To enter this award, directors must be under the age of 42 and must be able to point to


Lighting company beats the competition


Portsmouth-based Gemma Lighting has secured a $1 million export order to supply energy efficient LED lighting to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

“We are likely to be creating a number of jobs as a result of this contract, which is excellent news for UK manufacturing,“ commented managing director Craig Manuel. After a nine- month evaluation process, Gemma Lighting was chosen ahead of stern competition from the USA and Europe. Manuel continued:


“We have been supplying LED Lighting into Dubai for many years now, and have obtained a reputation in the region for quality and reliability. Our products have outperformed the competition by working effectively in high temperate climates and harsh environments.“


Gemma Lighting has bucked the trend by growing sales year on year in difficult trading times. As well as significant money savings, its product improves CCTV surveillance at night and helps lower CO2 emissions.

Global Director of the Year This award is open to all directors in UK-based companies with overseas sales. The entrant must be able to show that a minimum of 25% of the company’s turnover comes from overseas sales and must be successful in exporting, and committed to continued growth in the international business arena.


Public/Third Sector Director of the Year This award is open to all directors in the public sector as well as those working in the third sector and other charitable or not-for-profit organisations.


Family Business Director of the Year Entrants for this award will be directors in second generation or more family businesses and will have responded to the specific challenges that face directors in such well-established firms.


Chairman’s Award for Leadership in


Corporate Responsibility This award is to recognise those directors who are able to demonstrate that, through their direct actions and leadership, their business has made a positive impact on the local community, wider society and/or the environment.


The Gala awards dinner is on Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Landmark Hotel, Marylebone.
