• Data centre and connectivity services’ provider C4L, which has a site at Bournemouth, has appointed Simon Mewett to the newly-created role of chief executive officer. He will be responsible for driving C4L to achieve accelerated growth through enhanced profitability, acquisition and an increasing presence in the UK and Europe. Mewett has over 20 years’ experience in communications, leading businesses in growth through investment and acquisition, including a former role as a group managing director for the Easy Group.


• Tax specialist Linda Preece (left) has joined Dorset and New Forest chartered accountants and business advisers Princecroft Willis (PcW) as technical tax director. A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), she is a chartered tax adviser with more than 30 years’ experience. Preece specialises in corporate tax advisory work and has many years of experience in corporate planning, particularly for owner-managed companies, including acquisitions/ disposals and restructuring exercises, plus extensive knowledge of corporate tax reliefs and other planning opportunities. She is pictured with Mark Johns, PcW’s managing partner.


• The University of Southampton has appointed Professor Graham Reed, acknowledged as a pioneer in silicon photonics and the initiator of the research field in the UK. He established the Silicon Photonics Research Group in 1989 at the University of Surrey and the group has gone on to provide a series of world-leading results, and is renowned for its work on silicon optical modulators. Now Reed and his team have moved the group’s base to the University of Southampton, where they will be using many of the state-of- the-art facilities on offer in the new Mountbatten Institute.


• Saxlund International, a Southampton-based biomass and bulk solids handler which is historically dominant in the waste water industry, has appointed Rob Leighton as sales manager. In line with the company’s development strategy he will be responsible to the board of directors for developing the business in existing and new markets. Leighton was formerly UK sales manager for light industries at Schenck Process UK.


• Professor Kostas Skenderis, chair in mathematical physics at the University of Southampton, is the only scientist in the UK, and one of two in Europe, to be singled out for a research grant to explore the laws of physics at the beginning of time. He will receive $175,000 to investigate the question ’Was there a beginning of time and space?’ He has been named among 20 other global scientists to receive an award from the New Frontiers in Astronomy and Cosmology international grant competition, established to encourage the exploration of fundamental questions in the field.

• Rich Watts from Southampton has talked his way to the top in a prestigious national business contest. Watts, an account director at communications agency Leepeckgroup, has been named PEER 1 Hosting UK Business Speaker of the Year 2012. His presentation, The Morale Margin, saw him take the title after it received the most marks in the final, held at the hub theatre in Southampton, from a panel of expert judges and audience votes. Watts was presented with his prize by Ross Thornley from RT Media, receiving a trophy and £2,000.


• Emma Zeqo has joined Morris Crocker Chartered Accountants at Havant as an audit and accounts semi senior. Having worked in accounts for 10 years and dealt with clients from all business sectors, her role is to work within the team focusing on delivering a first- class service while carrying out audit, accounts and tax assignments.


• Dennis Hall was special guest speaker at a business networking event on his last day at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, after 27 years’ service, when he provided a unique insight into his career to local business representatives. The networking event brought together a varied mix of local business professionals.


• Four new trainee solicitors: Laura Lyons, Georgina Burrows, Rachel Kimber and Kate Tyers have joined Coffin Mew Solicitors. Lyons has already worked in the new homes property team for three years, gaining client contact and experience in a highly- pressurised environment. Burrows studied law at the University of Southampton and has most recently been working with a specialist probate company, managing a range of estate administration cases. Kimber also studied law at the University of Southampton and completed work experience at JPMorgan Chase in the investment banking anti- money laundering and financial crime team. Lastly, Tyers has formerly worked in the banking industry, redressing payment protection insurance claims on behalf of a leading UK banking group.
