Learning to Think Like an Entrepreneur
In an Upper School class- room, Wharton and Lon- don School of Economics graduate and SCH teacher Rahilla Zafar and her stu- dents discuss risk taking in a CEL seminar on entrepre- neurship. Across campus in the robotics lab, Engineering and Robotics Department Chair Peter Randall works with students on program- ming their robots in a CEL class in New Media/Engi- neering. These are the kinds of ac- tivities you’re likely to see if you visit one of the Upper School seminars that are part of the new Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership
curriculum. Launched this fall, CEL is the Philadelphia area’s first independent school curriculum based on the study of entrepre- neurship and dedicated to developing those skills and attitudes identified by lead- ing educators and business leaders as essential for suc- cess in the 21st century. Designing a Better Solution Walk around the school and chances are you’ll no- tice batches of colorful post- it notes filled with creative, out-of-the-box ideas—evi- dence of the design thinking process at work. Originally conceived at Stanford Uni- versity and inspired by processes used in the design field, design thinking has been introduced into the SCH curriculum as a way to teach students the art of problem solving from a cre- ative and human-centered perspective. “It’s a problem-solving
approach that supports and complements the goals

of CEL and that will be a lifelong resource for our students,” says Dr. Priscilla Sands. A rising 9th grader, who received training in de- sign thinking this summer, explains it this way: “Before, I didn’t really care about my users—I wanted a product that suited my needs and my needs only. Now, I am always asking people for their opinions and trying to better suit my solution to their needs. I didn’t know how important a skill this was, and I’m excited to use it next year in 9th grade.” eSCHift
This past summer, 24 stu- dents from eight countries, including 11 from SCH Academy, participated in the school’s inaugural 10-day Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute, known as eSCHift, to teach students the fundamentals of entre- preneurship and design thinking. eSCHift is part of the Center for Entrepre- neurial Leadership’s Global
Immersion curriculum and is offered as an additional summer learning opportu- nity for 8th-12th graders. Through hands-on develop- ment of their own products, visits to innovative compa- nies, and discussions with respected entrepreneurs, the students gained invalu- able insights into what it takes to develop an en- trepreneurial mindset, as well as an appreciation of how design thinking can be applied to new product development. eSCHift will be expanded next summer to include more interna- tional programs tailored to students in all divisions and with a focus on how to apply design thinking and entrepreneurial skills in specific areas, such as sports management, bio- entrepreneurism, and sus- tainable fashion.
