a single piece calls “Epi- sodic Drift #2”. It stretches from the front to the back of the gallery. A series of lad- ders are displayed across the room - running along the floor, propped against the wall, hanging from the ceiling.

But a second, and closer,

look reveals that what seems three-dimensional is really two-dimensional - that these ladders are really photographs of lad- ders, mounted on fiber- board or glued to the walls. The work has been done with tremendous precision and attention to detail. It’s almost necessary to manu- ally check to confirm that these are actually images of reality. A triumph of trompe l’oeil!

The ladders lead you

across the room, from entrance to back wall. Wil- liams says that ladders are designed to be portable, temporary and moveable,

yet these ladders are silent, unmoving, removed, re- mote. And yet they move you toward an increas- ingly complex formation, to spaces which they define and shape. The impression is of sus- pended animation. They have been stopped in mid- air, caught in space during their flight. Was there an explosion? Or was gravity suspended for a moment in time? A really intriguing display which invites study and thought.
