ates of the U.S. National Team Development Pro- gram, Jones is playing this season for the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks while Shore, a Denver native, is beginning his freshman season of college hockey with the Pioneers. The game will feature 40 of the top American prospects eligible for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Jones was recognized as an A-list prospect - a

player deserving of first-round consideration - on NHL Central Scouting’s summer watch list. Tom Chmielewski, from Colorado Springs, will serve as one of the game’s two referees.

You can’t say enough about the tremendous show of support the Colorado

sporting community championed at this month’s equipment drive held ear- lier this month at Pepsi Center in the spirit of Jessica Redfield Ghawi. More than 25,000 pieces of sports gear, $11,000 in cash donations and

$30,000 in scholarship funds were collected at the event, which was spon- sored by A Precious Child. Redfield, an aspiring sports journalist who had a passion for hockey, was

one of the 12 people killed in the Aurora movie theater shooting in July. She was 24 years old. To donate to the Redfield Ghawi giveSPORTS Scholarship Fund, visit APreciousChild.com.

What a Labor Day Weekend it was for the Evolution Elite Hockey Club,

which skated to championships in all three divisions at the Wildcats Hockey Club-hosted Labor Day Invitational, which was held in Anaheim. Led by director Sergei Bautin, the Evolution brought home banners in the Bantam A, Pee Wee AA and Squirt BB brackets. The Bantams forged a 3-0-1 record on their way to the title thanks to the

offensive exploits of Gavin Medina and Ben O’Rourke, who scored eight goals apiece, and the goaltending tandem of Mitch Volmert and Brandon Hanson. Led by Beck Moore (four goals, eight points), the Pee Wees cruised to a

4-0 record in So Cal. Goaltenders Zach Stern and Josiah Kellim were ex- ceptional between the pipes. Netminders Luc Pashel and Nicholas Novodvorskiy help lift the

Squirts to a 3-0-1 mark in their division. Jack Hamilton put home five goals (seven points) for the Evolution.

Some of the best Midget and Pee Wee hockey teams in the world converge on Denver’s Big Bear Ice Arena next month. From Oct. 12-14, the Thunderbirds will host a 16U Tier I Elite League

showcase with the circuit’s Rocky Mountain Division teams competing with clubs from the Midwest Division. The next weekend, the program will host 18U teams from the league’s Rocky Mountain and Pacific Divisions. Earlier in the month (Oct. 6-8), a SuperSeries AAA showcase will be held

at Big Bear featuring top Pee Wee Major (2000) and Minor (2001) teams from across the country.

In the back of these pages, you’ll see the beginning of our coverage of ice and inline hockey from the state of Utah. Much like Colorado, there’s plenty of young, emerging talent coming out of the rinks from our neigh- bors to the west and we’re looking forward to highlighting their accom- plishments.
