About Psychological Sciences


Psychology as a discipline embraces a wide range of perspectives and approaches that contribute to the scientific study and understanding of behaviour, especially human behaviour. The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences offers a diverse range of quality undergraduate and postgraduate psychology programs unrivalled in Australia. Although Psychology has been taught at the University of Melbourne since the late 1800s, the School is the newest of the five schools of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, having been officially declared a School in its own right in March 2012.


The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences is one of the most highly regarded psychology schools in Australia. Ranked in the top three nationally for the quality of its research and recently ranked 8th in the world by QS global rankings, the school attracts some of the best students nationally and internationally


to its broad range of APS accredited undergraduate, graduate, professional training and research programs.


The school has wide ranging research interests with emphasis on several major areas:


Cognitive and behavioural neuroscience Perception, development of speech, psychology of language, decision making, laterality, attention, motor control, psychophysiology and behavioural electroencephalography


Social psychology Attitudes and social cognition, social networks, self, group processes, social identity, industrial/organisational psychology


Clinical science Clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology


Developmental psychology Cognitive, biological, emotional and social development across the lifespan)


Quantitative psychology Mathematical modelling of behaviour and social processes, development of tests and research methodology.


Research covers diverse topical issues, such as diverse as visual perception, language processing, cognitive development, group behaviour and social attitudes, memory disorders and brain lateralization. With the breadth and depth of that experience, you can expect lecturers to incorporate the latest ideas, theories, and research findings into their teaching.

Why study psychology at Melbourne?


The Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences offers psychology as an area of study to be completed alongside other subjects in the six Melbourne Degrees offered by the University. This provides you with the flexibility to tailor your academic interests. You can choose to study psychology by completing an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited 125-point sequence, as a 75-point minor area of study or as individual subjects.


Arts students, for example, may choose to combine studies in psychology and criminology to provide a strong background in social and behavioural science and research methodology. Science students on the other hand, can opt to study behavioural neuroscience which combines study in the biomedical courses with psychology to examine the relationship between brain function and behaviour.
